今日は、先の記事で少し触れた”DIOGUARDI”について、お話をさせて頂きたいと思っています。




デザイナーの名前は、”Daniel Dioguardi (ダニエル・ディオグァルディ)”。



これまでにブランドとしてコレクションを製作し、世の中に登場したことは未だにありません。



しかし、これまで彼が手を尽くした洋服で世界の数多くの方の要望が叶い、たくさんの人に喜びを与えてきた。



そして、果たしてきたキャリアからすると、”デザイナー”としては非常に珍しく、そこで身に付けてきたもの、現在もものづくりを追究し続ける精神性、そして、実際に生み出されているものを見ると、とても貴重な才能であり、知られるべき人物だと思う。




もちろん、僕自身も、当たり前のことながら、DIOGUARDIというブランドの存在を知りませんでした。




それが、自分がLE BERGER / Herd Limited.に加入するタイミングで、DIOGUARDIもデビューするという話を聞き、初めて目にしたその”実物”。




美しく、力強く、洋服そのもの一点一点が”生きてる”。




本人の積み上げてきた技術と、今もなお追究する洋服づくり。




このことに途轍もなくビリビリに痺れました。





“トラウザーズテーラー DIOGUARDI”。





また、詳細は、後日掲載をしようと思っておりますが、4月5日(土)〜4月13日(日)の9日間で、我々LE BERGERが直接一般の方に向けてお披露目し、皆様に知って頂ける機会、手にして頂ける機会をつくりたいと思っています。




デビューにあたり、まずはブランドについて紹介を致します。

 

3月上旬、ウィメンズウィークでパリに滞在した際に、代表の秋吉と、ロンドン郊外にあるDIOGUARDIのアトリエを訪れました。

 

ここがDIOGUARDIのアトリエ。

間もなく皆様にお披露目できるDIOGUARDIのコレクションは、この場所で誕生します。


デザイナー本人がコレクションをつくり上げるまでに必要とする道具をはじめ、頭の中と向き合う場、実際に製作するために手を動かす場が共存する場所。



そして、ダニエルさん自身の美意識を投影させたものが多様に集結した、とてもパーソナルな空間でした。

 

こちらの写真の人物こそが、”Daniel Dioguardi”本人である。



今から20年近くも前にロンドンのテーラー職人のもとに飛び込み、そこからスタートしたテーラーとしてのキャリア。



現在、DIOGUARDIのコレクションをつくるにあたって、全てのことがこのアトリエ空間に凝縮されていました。

ここは、デザイン画のデッサンや、感じていること、考えていることを留めて、インスピレーションを整理するためのデザインスペース。

 

 

頭の中にあることを明確にするためのメモのようなものでさえも、とてもセンスが感じられました。

対して、すぐ近くには、自らが洋服をつくるためのメイキングスペースが設けられていた。



頭の中にあるものを可視化し、それをすぐに形にできる環境を自身で整え、そうすることで、つくり上げるコレクションに磨きをかけていくことができる。

 

実際に裁断を行なう様子を再現してくれた。


当日は、レースをカットする様子を見せてくれたのですが、レースというのは生地が薄く、それに加えて、織り柄の変化が大きいこともあり、常に切る方向に注意が必要な性質を持つのですが、そのようなハードルが高い生地も難なくこなす技術力。



また、DIOGUARDIでは、上記のレースのような薄地から、デニムなどの厚手の生地まで扱う範囲がとても広い。



これは、通常の洋服づくりではあり得ないこと。



一般的に洋服を量産する場合には、薄地は薄地専門、厚地は厚地専門、カジュアルはカジュアル、ドレスはドレス、などと必然的にジャンルが分かれるのですが、ダニエルさんはその全てをやり遂げる実力を持つ。



だから、裁断の際に用いるハサミであっても複数本を持ち、生地に応じて適したものを使い分けて裁断を行なう。

 

そして、実際に縫う様子も見せてくれました。

日頃から使うという、ノスタルジックな見た目をしたミシン。


古いミシンですが、縫うパワーがあり、DIOGUARDIのコレクションでは欠かせないものだそうだ。


ダニエルさんが言うには、本縫いのシングルミシンであっても、個性の異なる複数台を用いて、生地の厚みや、縫う箇所、仕様、更には、”縫い目がどう見えるか”ということまでも考えてミシンを使い分けてるそうです。



多くの場合、本縫いのミシンであれば一台で済ませることが多いのですが、糸の目さえも大事にしたいと言っていたことがとても印象的に感じた。



このように明確に、ものづくりの全ての工程に対して、複数の選択肢を持たせた中で、自分自身がベストと考えることを選択し、その美意識を一つ一つ形にすることで、高い完成度を誇るものが生み出されるのはもちろんですが、、、



それだけ細部にまで注意力を注ぐということは、とにかく職人としての仕事をまっとうし、”全力で洋服づくりに向き合う姿勢”がヒシヒシと感じられた瞬間でした。

 

これまで手掛けた様々なパンツの型紙が並ぶ。

 

 

三面が窓ガラスで囲われ、よく陽の光が入るメイキングスペースは、太陽の自然の光が入り、糸目や生地の状態が非常に鮮明に見えるそうです。


これにより、製作段階からより良い方法で、より細かくつくることを実現できると言っていました。


取材をさせてもらっている中で、ダニエルさん本人が、服づくりに非常に熱心で、とにかくレベルが高いものをつくろうと考えているのが、随所から感じられました。

 

 

コレクション製作に必要なもの全てが揃い、ものづくりに没頭するためのアトリエスペースは、まさに”DIOGUARDI”をつくるために存在している空間。



そして、先ほども触れましたが、テーラーとしての職人技。




このことは、20年近く前に飛び込んだテーラーの世界が大きな礎になっているそうです。




昔からテーラー文化が根付くロンドンで、当時は、手縫い縫製をはじめとした、高度で、大変な忍耐力が必要とされる仕立ての様々なテクニックを自分自身に叩き込んだそうです。



そこでは、技術だけではなく、並外れた細部への気遣いと、感性を持ち合わせることにつながったという。



その後には、10年近くにわたって、ヨーロッパのハイエンドなブランドの”店舗専属テーラー”、それでいて、顧客層の中でも、非常に裕福なVIP向けの仕立てを担当していたそうです。





そのため、ある意味では、普通では困難と思えるほどの、高難易度の要望が相次いだそう。




また、規格が定められた洋服を、特定の顧客のためにカスタマイズをし、それも”元の見た目のデザインと寸分狂わぬ見え方に仕上げる”ということが必要な条件であったそうだ。




通常の店舗では「無理だ」と断るような要望でも、ダニエルさんが当時所属していたのは、世界的にも高額なブランドである。



とてもハードルが高いことを長年乗り越え続け、通常では要望を叶えることが難しいカスタマイズさえも、実現し続けることで、数多くの人に喜びを届けてきたのである。



自らの職人技を駆使し、洋服づくりを通して、人々の心に届き、喜びを与えること。



そして、



“既に存在するものをカスタマイズする技術”を習得した期間だったのである。




それが、今のDIOGUARDIの洋服づくりのクオリティの礎になったとダニエルさんは言う。




本来、洋服に限らず、ものづくりというのは、手にする人の心を動かし、感動を与えることができるものだと思う。




そのことをダニエルさんに会い、アトリエに行って、改めて認識させられた日となりました。




そして、この精神性の部分だけではなく、DIOGUARDIの洋服づくりの実力とセンス。




このことをビシビシとご体感頂けるコレクションだと思います。

 

 

DIOGUARDI “Re.touched”というコレクション。


まさに、正真正銘、”既に存在するものをカスタマイズする技術”が惜しげもなく注がれたシリーズ。



ブランドでは、その他のシリーズも存在するのですが、デザイナーが時間をかけて長年培ってきた凄みを存分に感じる”Re.Touched”をご覧ください。




このシリーズは、今回掲載したアトリエで全てつくられます。





一点につき、大体8時間はかかる。10時間くらいかかるものもある。とダニエルさんが言っていたのですが、つまり日産一点というもの。





アップサイクルでのものづくりを行なうブランドは存在すると思いますが、それが”テーラーが構築するもの”というのは、僕は見たことがありません。





そして、完成してるRe.Touchedのコレクションは、どれも一級品の造形を描く。





これは”驚異”と言える。





ダニエルさんが手がけるDIOGUARDIの洋服を通して、皆様の心に意味のあること、新たな発見となることをお届けできればと思っています。





冒頭にも記載をしましたが、DIOGUARDIのお披露目は、4月5日(土)〜13日(日)を予定しています。

Today, I would like to talk a bit about “DIOGUARDI,” which I briefly mentioned in a previous article.

The designer’s name is Daniel Dioguardi.

Up to now, the brand has never officially released a collection or made its debut to the public.

However, through the garments he has worked on, he has fulfilled the requests of countless people around the world and brought joy to many.

Considering his career, he is quite unique as a “designer.” From what he has acquired through his experiences, the spirit with which he continues to pursue craftsmanship, and the actual garments he produces, I truly believe he is a rare talent who deserves recognition.

Of course, I myself had never heard of the brand DIOGUARDI before.

It was when I joined LE BERGER / Herd Limited. that I first heard DIOGUARDI would be debuting. That’s when I laid eyes on the actual pieces for the first time.

They were beautiful, powerful—each piece felt alive.

The skills he has cultivated over the years and his ongoing dedication to craftsmanship electrified me to the core.

“Trouser Tailor: DIOGUARDI.”

I’ll share more details in the near future, but from Saturday, April 5 to Sunday, April 13, over the course of nine days, we at LE BERGER will hold a special event to unveil this brand directly to the public—offering people the opportunity to learn about and own these remarkable garments. To mark this debut, let me begin by introducing the brand.

In early March, during our stay in Paris for Women’s Fashion Week, our director Nobu and I visited the DIOGUARDI atelier located in the outskirts of London.

The DIOGUARDI collection, which will soon be unveiled to all of you, is born in this very atelier.

It is a space where everything coexists—the tools the designer needs to bring his collection to life, the place where he confronts his thoughts, and the hands-on workshop where ideas become reality.

It is also an intensely personal space, filled with a diverse array of objects and inspirations that reflect Daniel’s own aesthetic sensibilities.

Nearly 20 years ago, he dove headfirst into the world of tailoring, apprenticing under a London tailor—that was the beginning of his career.

Now, everything that goes into creating the DIOGUARDI collection is distilled into this very atelier space.

A design space where sketches, thoughts, and feelings are captured—where inspiration is gathered and organized.
Even the notes he jots down to clarify what’s in his mind carry a distinct sense of style. Right nearby, there’s a dedicated making space where he physically creates the garments himself.
By visualizing what exists in his mind and having the environment to immediately bring it to life, he’s able to refine and elevate every piece in the collection with precision and clarity.

He demonstrated how he actually cuts fabric.

That day, he showed us how he cuts lace—a delicate material with a constantly changing woven pattern, requiring careful attention to cutting direction at all times. Despite the high level of difficulty, he handled it with ease, showing his impressive technical skill.

What’s remarkable about DIOGUARDI is the wide range of fabrics he works with—everything from delicate lace to thick materials like denim.

This is something almost unheard of in typical garment production.
In mass production, there are usually clear divisions: specialists for lightweight fabrics, others for heavy fabrics, casualwear handled separately from formalwear, and so on.

But Daniel possesses the skill to handle all of it himself.
Even the scissors he uses for cutting vary—he owns multiple pairs and selects the most appropriate one depending on the fabric he’s working with.

He also showed us how he sews the garments in person.

He showed us the nostalgic-looking sewing machines he uses daily.

Though old, these machines have strong power, and Daniel told us they are indispensable to the making of DIOGUARDI collections.

According to him, even for basic single-stitch sewing, he uses several machines with different characteristics. Depending on the fabric thickness, sewing location, construction details, and even how the stitch lines will visually appear, he switches between machines.

In most cases, one sewing machine is enough for straight stitches—but what struck me most was his remark about valuing even how the visible thread appears on the garment.

By clearly having multiple options for every step of the making process, and by intentionally choosing what he believes to be the best, Daniel brings his sense of aesthetics to life piece by piece. Of course, this leads to garments with incredibly high precision and completeness…

But more than that, the moment deeply conveyed his wholehearted dedication to craftsmanship—his pursuit to fully commit to the making of clothing, down to the finest detail.

Various trouser patterns that he has worked on over the years were also lined up in the atelier.

The making space, surrounded on three sides by glass windows, is filled with natural sunlight, allowing every stitch and fabric texture to be seen with exceptional clarity.

Daniel mentioned that this natural lighting makes it possible to work with greater precision and care during the creation process, leading to a higher level of craftsmanship from the very beginning. Throughout the interview, it became clear from every detail that Daniel is deeply passionate about garment making and is constantly striving to create work of the highest level.

The atelier space, fully equipped with everything necessary for creating the collection, is truly a place that exists solely for the making of “DIOGUARDI.”
It’s a sanctuary where Daniel can fully immerse himself in the craft.

As mentioned earlier, his skill as a tailor is the very foundation of his work.

Nearly two decades ago, Daniel dove headfirst into the world of tailoring—a world rooted in tradition and craftsmanship.
In London, a city with a long history of tailoring culture, he trained himself relentlessly in techniques that require exceptional patience and precision, especially hand-sewn garment construction.

This experience not only refined his technical skills but also developed his exceptional eye for detail and sharpened his aesthetic sensibility.

Later, for nearly ten years, he worked as an in-house tailor for some of Europe’s most prestigious luxury brands—serving an elite clientele, including VIPs of remarkable affluence.

As a result, he often faced—and mastered—requests that would be considered nearly impossible elsewhere.

He was responsible for custom-fitting ready-made garments to perfectly match the unique preferences and body shapes of each client, all while preserving the original design’s appearance down to the last detail.

While many boutiques might reject such requests as unfeasible, Daniel worked at the highest level, where no compromise was acceptable.

Time and again, he overcame challenges, creating highly customized garments that brought joy and satisfaction to clients, no matter how difficult the demand.

Through this, he came to understand how tailoring could move people—how clothing could reach their hearts and become a source of joy.

This experience also gave him a rare and invaluable skill:
“The ability to customize something that already exists.”

Daniel says this period laid the foundation for the quality and refinement now seen in the DIOGUARDI collection.

Ultimately, craftsmanship—whether in clothing or any other form—has the power to stir emotion and inspire.
That belief was reaffirmed the day we met Daniel and visited his atelier.

But beyond that powerful philosophy, what truly shines through in the DIOGUARDI collection is the combination of exceptional skill and distinctive taste. We believe this is a collection that allows you to fully experience that vision.

The DIOGUARDI “Re.touched” collection —
This series is the embodiment of Daniel’s mastery in the art of “customizing what already exists.”

Although the brand features other lines as well, Re.touched is the one that most powerfully reflects the depth of experience and technical brilliance Daniel has cultivated over many years.

And every piece in this series is meticulously crafted in the very atelier featured earlier.

Daniel told us that each piece takes about 8 to 10 hours to complete — meaning he can only finish one garment per day.

There are many brands in the world practicing upcycled design.
But one that approaches it through the lens of a trained tailor?
I’ve never seen that before.

What’s more — the completed Re.touched pieces are nothing short of exceptional in their construction and form.
Each one tells its own story through masterful tailoring and intentional reconstruction.

This collection is, without a doubt, astonishing — a true feat of craftsmanship.

Through DIOGUARDI, and especially the Re.touched collection, we hope to deliver garments that resonate deeply, stir emotion, and offer moments of discovery for those who wear them.

As mentioned at the beginning,
DIOGUARDI will make its official debut from Saturday, April 5th to Sunday, April 13th.
