今日は、SILVANA MANETTI(シルヴァナ・マネッティ)がつくる生地と、それによって製作されるストール、スカーフのコレクションを紹介させていただきます。

 

 

遥か2500年前には確実に実例があり、考古学では、発明自体は8000年〜6000年前にまで遡ると考えられている”フェルト”。

 

その誕生は、偶発的なものだったとされますが、現代では、その生産方法には、様々なものがあります。

 

 

古代の偶発から始まったフェルトは、SILVANA MANETTIによって意識的な創造の技法へと昇華されています。

 

 

ブランドでは、フェルトの原理を深く理解し、それを再考し、独自に応用することで、世界的に見ても唯一性が高く、非常に魅力的なものをつくり出しています。

 

 

糸にする前、繊維そのものを設計する。それがSILVANA MANETTIのものづくりです。

 

 

僕自身がバイヤーだった時にも、そのものづくりに、強く惹き込まれてきました。

 

 

 

 

 

 

2001年よりイタリアで”職人的技巧を伴った生地の研究開発所”として誕生した、SILVANA MANETTI Textile Designer Lab。

 

これまで20年以上にわたって素材の研究を行ない続け、ヨーロッパの様々なハイエンドブランドとの協業も行なってきました。

 

 

現在は、自社の特徴を最も活かすことのできる”生地そのもの”を最大限に活かしたストールを中心としたコレクションの開発と発表をしています。

 

 

時に作品のようにも感じられる見た目。

 

そして、身に着けたときの驚くような軽さと、暖かさ。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

自社で開発したオリジナルの専用マシンを用いることで、非常に柔らかで、軽やかな肌あたりを実現しています。

 

 

その上、それは糸ではなく、素材の”繊維の状態”で、繊維同士を固着させているというもの。

 

 

そのために、表面の独特な見た目や、色合いを実現しています。

 

このような長年培ってきた開発力と衰えない精神性、加えて、持ち合わせた色彩感覚と感性。

 

この要素が掛け合わされて生まれる数々のものは、非常に唯一性が高く、素晴らしいものです。

 

 

 

そして、それらは導き出した独自の方法で、一つ一つが形にされる。

 

 

それは、アトリエの台の上に、設計通りに“繊維の束を並べていき、オリジナルのマシンを駆使して、繊維を固着させる”というもの。

 

 

ブランドとして追い求める”風合い”と”デザイン”の両方を実現するために、長年の知見から導き出されたSILVANA MANETTIだけが持つ製作レシピです。

 

 

 

通常、生地をつくるという工程は、糸を編むか、織るか。

 

そのどちらかが欠かせません。

 

そして、生地のデザイン規格によっては、糸の配置の転換により、柄や色合いが切り替えられます。

 

そうなると、定められた箇所で色糸が変更されるため、色柄の切り替わりが明確になります。

 

 

しかし、SILVANA MANETTIでは、”繊維”により色や柄が切り替えられます。

 

 

一つのストールの中で描かれるコントラストは曖昧で、抽象的。

 

 

その独特の佇まいに目を奪われ、惹き込まれるコレクションです。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

SILVANA MANETTIの製品は、まるでストールではなく、全く別の作品物を見ているようにまで錯覚させられます。

 

 

また、手触りや肌触りは、通常はフェルトであれば、糸になっていないものでも硬く、表面も糊で固められてザラッとしている印象です。

 

近いとされる手法でも、圧縮や縮絨させているものであれば、糸として紡績され、薄く織られた生地を縮めてフェルト化させているものがあります。

 

 

SILVANA MANETTIにおいては、上記のどちらにも当てはまるものではない。

 

 

例えるならば、手法としては、フェルトが最も近しいものではありますが、一般的なフェルト製品とは、全く別の風合いで出来上がっていることから、「フェルト化」と呼ぶよりも、「繊維同士の固着化」と呼ぶのが最適なのではないかとも思います。

 

 

 

実際の見た目と、手に持ったときの感覚、首に巻いたとき、肩に乗せたときの心地良さ、これはSILVANA MANETTIの独創性を強く感じられる要素です。

 

 

その上、それが寒い季節に日々使い続けることによって、更なる魅力を体感できる。

 

 

僕自身も、これまで使い続けていますが、初めて目にしたのは、バイヤーだった頃。2021年の夏頃でした。

 

 

当時、「このようなストールが世の中に存在するのか…」と非常に衝撃的に感じたことを、今も鮮烈に覚えています。

 

その頃から、自分自身もブランドのファンでもあり、秋冬の季節には暖かいストールを、そうではない季節には、特殊な方法で染色が施されたシルクのスカーフを日頃から身に着けています。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

こちらは、50cm × 200cmのストール。

 

素材は、カシミヤ60% / シルク40%で構成されています。

 

ブランドのコレクションの多くは、単一の動物繊維だけではなく、獣毛や羊毛、シルクなど複数の非常に質の高い繊維同士を組み合わせて固着させることで、製品をつくりあげています。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

それぞれの素材同士が混ざり合うコントラスト。

 

加えて、ストールの形状も、とても有機的です。

 

 

角が立った長方形ではないため、機械的に製作されたような冷たさは微塵も感じさせません。

 

 

この形状は、首に着けた際には、独特なフォルムを生み出すことに繋がり、柔らかさを纏った美しさにつながります。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

こちらのモデルは、ウール50% / シルク50%の混率。

 

 

比較的厚みを持たせたウールをベースに、シルクファイバーを乗せ、その上からハンドペイントを施したもの。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

「有機的」という言葉を先に記載しましたが、SILVANA MANETTIのストールは、まるで生命を持つかのように、着け心地も見た目も変わっていく。

 

その”生き物感”も大きな魅力です。

 

 

そして、その様は、クリエイターの方々からも共感されています。

 

日々、何かを形にしている人、何かを生み出したいと考えて取り組んでいる人の心に響くというのは、決して当たり前のことではなく、SILVANA MANETTIのコレクションの凄みの一つだと思います。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

次に、70cm × 70cmの大きさ、素材はシルク100%のスカーフ。

 

 

こちらは、繊維を固着させたものではなく、SILVANA MANETTIの別の側面の開発力が見られるシリーズです。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

中心のブルーの箇所は、19世紀に確立された写真の現像技法、紫外線で発色させる”サイアノタイプ (Cyanotype)”をシルクの染色で応用しています。

 

 

対して、縁取ったブラウンの箇所は、染料と銀の粉末を混ぜ合わせ、銀を酸化させることで生み出した色合い。

 

 

銀による抗菌作用もあるということですが、シルクを染色するための通常の染料では見られない色合いの濃淡、コントラスト実現したもの。

 

 

そして、このような技法は、ブランドで更に研究を深め、より様々な素材、コレクションに応用を進めています。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

こちらは、同様にサイアノタイプを用いることで、図柄を描くスカーフです。

 

特殊な溶剤と紫外線を用いることで、深く神秘的にも感じる青い色合いを演出するサイアノタイプ。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

元あるレース素材の図柄をスカーフに写し、サイアノタイプの原理を用いて浮かび上がらせたもの。

 

懐古的な図柄を選定し、それを形にする染色方法。

 

生地の研究開発を続けるブランドならではの、高い創造性を感じることができます。

 

 

今回のshop talkで取り上げたストールやスカーフは、SILVANA MANETTIのコレクションのごく一部。

 

 

ブランドのメインとなるコレクションは、アトリエで専用マシンでの製作を行なうため、大きさや厚みなど、物理的な制約がある中でのものづくりを行なっています。

 

 

しかし、それでもなお、見る人を惹きつけるより良いものをつくりたい、より美しいものをつくりたいという精神性を持ち、日々製作を続け、他に類を見ない一貫したものづくりをしています。

 

 

 

ブランドのSilvanaさんやOliviaさんの好きな質感を製品として再現するために、独自のマシンをつくり上げたそうです。

 

生地研究開発所として、2001年からアトリエでの製作を続け、積み上げてきた試行錯誤や実績によって、SILVANA MANETTIのコレクションは生み出されています。

 

 

今の季節は、ストールやスカーフを身に着ける人が増える季節です。

Today, I would like to introduce the fabrics created by SILVANA MANETTI and the collection of stoles and scarves born from them.

There are confirmed examples of felt dating back 2,500 years, and archaeologists believe that its invention itself can be traced as far as 6,000 to 8,000 years ago.

Although its origin is said to have been accidental, there are now many different ways of producing felt in the modern era.

From those ancient coincidences, felt has been elevated into a deliberate art of creation by SILVANA MANETTI.

By deeply understanding the principles of felt, reinterpreting them, and applying them in an entirely original way, the brand creates works of remarkable uniqueness and beauty—recognized even on a global scale.

Before it becomes yarn, the fiber itself is designed.
That is the essence of SILVANA MANETTI’s craftsmanship.

Even when I was a buyer, I found myself deeply drawn to their way of making things.

 

 

Founded in Italy in 2001 as a textile research and development laboratory grounded in artisanal skill,
SILVANA MANETTI Textile Designer Lab has continued to pursue material innovation for over two decades, collaborating with various high-end European brands along the way.

Today, the brand focuses on developing and presenting a collection of stoles that make the most of its defining strength—the fabric itself.

Their pieces possess an appearance that at times feels almost like a work of art,
and when worn, they reveal a surprising lightness and warmth that defy expectations.

 

 

 

 

 

 

By using original machines developed in-house, SILVANA MANETTI achieves an exceptionally soft and airy texture against the skin.

Moreover, the material is not made from yarn, but rather by bonding the fibers themselves while they remain in their raw state.
Through this process, each piece gains its distinctive surface and nuanced coloration.

This fusion of long-cultivated technical expertise, unwavering creative spirit, and a refined sense of color and sensitivity gives birth to works of exceptional uniqueness and beauty.

Each piece is shaped individually, guided by the brand’s own methods.
Fibers are meticulously arranged by hand on the atelier’s work table according to the design plan, then bonded together through the use of SILVANA MANETTI’s original machinery.

This process—developed through years of research—is a production recipe that only SILVANA MANETTI possesses, allowing the brand to realize both the tactile richness and the visual design it seeks to achieve.

In the conventional process of creating fabric, yarn must be either woven or knitted.
Patterns and colors are determined by the arrangement and switching of these yarns, resulting in clearly defined transitions.

At SILVANA MANETTI, however, it is the fibers themselves that determine the shifts in color and pattern.
Within a single stole, the contrasts that emerge are subtle and abstract, creating a visual depth that captivates the eye and draws the viewer in.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

SILVANA MANETTI’s creations can make you forget that you are looking at a stole at all—
they feel like works of art in their own right.

In terms of texture, what one might expect from ordinary felt—hardness, stiffness, or a slightly rough, glue-like finish—is entirely absent here.
Even in techniques that resemble felting, such as compressed or fulled fabrics, the process usually begins with spun yarn that is woven thinly and then shrunken.

At SILVANA MANETTI, neither of these approaches applies.

If one were to draw a comparison, their method may be closest to felting, yet the resulting texture is so distinct that it is better described not as felting, but as “bonding of fibers”.

The visual impression, the sensation in the hand, the comfort when wrapped around the neck or draped over the shoulders—
these all embody the profound originality of SILVANA MANETTI.

Moreover, as one continues to wear it through the colder months, the piece reveals even deeper layers of character and allure.

I have continued to use mine over the years, yet I still remember vividly when I first encountered it, back in the summer of 2021, during my time as a buyer.
The moment I saw it, I thought, “Could such a stole truly exist?”—the impression was unforgettable.

Since then, I have been a devoted admirer of the brand.
In the colder seasons, I wear their warm wool stoles; in other times of the year, their silk scarves—each dyed through a uniquely developed technique.

 

 

 

 

This piece is a stole measuring 50 cm by 200 cm.

The material composition is 60% cashmere and 40% silk.

Many of the brand’s collections are not made from a single type of animal fiber alone,
but rather through the bonding of multiple high-quality fibers—such as cashmere, wool, and silk—
to create each piece with unparalleled depth and character.

 

 

 

 

The contrast created by the intermingling of different fibers gives each piece a distinctive depth and harmony.

In addition, the shape of the stole itself is remarkably organic.

Because it is not a rigid rectangle with sharp corners, there is no sense of mechanical coldness—only softness and warmth.

When draped around the neck, this shape creates a unique silhouette,
resulting in a form of beauty that seems to embrace the body with gentleness.

 

 

 

 

 

This model is composed of 50% wool and 50% silk.

A relatively thick wool serves as the base,
onto which silk fibers are layered,

and finally, hand-painted detailing is applied to the surface.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As mentioned earlier with the word organic, the stoles of SILVANA MANETTI seem almost alive—
their appearance and the way they feel on the body evolve over time.

This sense of vitality, as if the piece itself possessed life, is one of their most compelling qualities.

This presence resonates deeply with many creators.
For those who spend their days shaping ideas into form, or striving to bring something new into existence,
to feel such a connection is far from ordinary—

Next, a 70 cm × 70 cm scarf, made of 100% silk.

Unlike the pieces in which fibers are bonded together,
this series showcases another dimension of SILVANA MANETTI’s creative and technical development.

 

 

 

 

The blue area at the center applies Cyanotype—a photographic printing technique established in the 19th century that develops color through exposure to ultraviolet light—
adapted here for dyeing silk.

In contrast, the brown border is created by mixing dye with powdered silver, allowing the silver to oxidize and produce its distinctive hue.

While the silver also imparts antibacterial properties, what stands out most is the range of tones and contrasts—
qualities not seen in conventional dyes used for silk.

This type of technique continues to be further explored and refined by the brand,
as SILVANA MANETTI expands its application across a wider array of materials and collections.

 

 

 

This piece likewise employs the Cyanotype technique to render its imagery.

Using a special solution and ultraviolet light,
the process brings forth a deep, almost mystical blue,
imbuing the silk with a quiet yet powerful visual presence.

 

 

 

 

The pattern of the original lace material has been transferred onto the scarf,
brought to life through the principles of Cyanotype.

By selecting nostalgic motifs and shaping them through this dyeing method,
the brand conveys a profound sense of creativity unique to a textile research atelier.

The stoles and scarves featured in this Shop Talk represent only a small part of SILVANA MANETTI’s collection.

At the heart of the brand’s work are pieces crafted within its atelier using dedicated machines,

Even within these limitations, the team continues to create with an enduring spirit—
driven by the desire to make something better, something more beautiful.
