今日は、Araki Yuuを紹介致します。

 

 

ブランドに関する情報がものすごく限られ、以前までは展示会を行なっていましたが、現在ではそれも行なっていないAraki Yuu。

 

 

取り扱いを行なう店舗数も僅かであり、”ベールに包まれているブランド”である。とも言える存在です。

 

しかし、その洋服には確実に込められているものがあります。

 

 

先日の、”LE BERGERについて”というshop talkの中でも少し触れたのですが、僕は良いタイミングが重なり、6,7年ほどの期間、実際に取り扱いをして、販売を行なっていました。

 

 

また、自分自身でもとても好んで所有し、自分の身を通してでも、販売をすることを通じてでも、Araki Yuuの洋服のクオリティというのは常々体感し、洋服そのものに魅了されてきました。

 

 

そして、今回、実際にそのAraki Yuuの洋服がつくられるアトリエを訪問し、改めてブランドのものづくりと、その考え方を感じてきました。

 

当日の待ち合わせは、朝9時だったのですが、ずっと話をしてて、気付いたらあっという間に17時。笑

 

 

あまり情報が公開されていないAraki Yuuですが、お好きな方は少し体感頂き、ご存知ではない方もこのようなつくり手の存在を知って頂けたらと思います。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Araki Yuuは、専門的な洋服の勉強を行ない、その後に縫製工場で様々なことを経験し、ブランドの設立につながっています。

 

ブランドとしての大きな特徴は、Araki Yuu本人と、奥さんとの2人で洋服をつくり上げること。

 

 

生地は、日本でも非常にレベルの高い機屋さんとの協業により、生地開発を行なったり、時にはデザイナー本人が生地の組織図を描き、複雑な見た目の生地を開発することもあります。

 

これまではドビー織機を用いて、非常に奥行きのあるムードの生地をつくっていましたが、今はまた更に生地においても新たな試みを行なっています。

これはまたお好きな方は楽しみにしてもらえると良いと思います。

 

 

そうして出来上がった生地をもとに、アトリエで、2人で洋服づくりを続けています。

 

 

デザイナー本人はもちろん、奥さんはカジュアルな洋服縫製の現場ではなく、より高度で繊細な技術が必要となる現場で磨き上げられたテクニックの持ち主。

 

 

ただ、僕は、デザイナー自身が自分で最初から最後までつくるということは、聞こえは良いですが、それが”一番良い”とは思っていません。

 

 

また、それがとても良いことで、価値があるというように捉えられるファッション業界ですが、正しくはそうではないと思います。

 

 

様々なたくさんの工程を経て、やっと出来上がるのが洋服です。

 

 

 

特定の工程を何十年もやってきた専門家が、それぞれに持ち合わせるノウハウを駆使し、それらが合致して出来上がる洋服は、とても品質の高いものであることは揺るぎない事実です。

 

“高いレベル”と”高いレベル”、そして、そこに”同じベクトルの思考”で臨み、濃度が下がることなく完成するものであれば、それはすごく良いものが誕生する。

 

 

僕が思う重要なことは、デザイナー自身が直接つくることによって、そうじゃないと形にできないようなものになっているかどうか。

 

 

 

Araki Yuuの場合で言うと、Araki Yuu本人が自分でつくることによって、他の方法では実現が困難なものができているのか。ということだと思います。

 

 

そして僕は、Araki Yuuの洋服を見る度に、その複雑で、驚くような仕様で構築された仕上がりから、紛れもなく、自分たちでつくっているからこそ出来上がるクオリティであることを感じてきました。

 

 

 

日本の洋服業界において、”簡単なもの”、”生産現場にとって効率的な仕様”の洋服が占める割合がどんどん高くなっているのをものすごく感じてしまいます。

 

Araki Yuuのような洋服があることで、”価値のあるものづくり”をいつも再認識させられるように思います。

 

 

それは完成した洋服を見ると、毎回それほどにまで思わせてくれるクオリティであり、自分で販売の現場でお客様方に話をしていて、実際にお買い物頂ける割合が非常に高い。

 

また1着のAraki Yuuの洋服を持っている方が2着目、3着目、、、と何着も何着も、”リピーター”として手にされるケースがとても多かった。

 

 

このことは、一度手にした洋服を日々使っていて、”もっと好きになったから”ということ以外に他ならないと思います。

 

 

1着持ったブランドを、1着持っただけで満足することもよくあることではないでしょうか。

 

 

しかし、僕が体験したのは、自分自身も、お客様方も、Araki Yuuの洋服を1着手にして、その凄みを知り、もっと持っていたくなる。

 

 

コレクション的に目に見えたヴィジュアルや、コーディネート提案が一切ないブランドなのにも関わらず、Araki Yuuでつくられた洋服、”そのものだけ”を見て、持っていたくなる。ということ。

 

 

それはある意味では、驚異的なことであり、それだけAraki Yuuの洋服が持つ”力”が人の心に届いているということだと思います。

 

 

そして、その理由は、Araki Yuuが向き合う、”ものづくりそのものの姿勢や精神が洋服に宿っているから”である。と今回アトリエを訪問してとても感じました。

 

 

 

具体的に、洋服生産の様子を一部紹介させて頂きます。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

先述のように、生地を織ること以外は、アトリエ内で自分たちでの生産。

 

パターンも自らが製作し、縫製工場で裁断を3年半やっていた経験から、裁断も自身で行ないます。

 

 

洋服の仕様が非常に凝って、細かいため、パターンの形状が特殊ですが、地の目を合わせるため、生地端からパターンの中心線までの距離を測って、きっちりと正確に型紙を配置していくという緻密さ。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

そして、こちらが実際に縫製をしている様子。

 

いつもどの箇所を見ても、とても綺麗に縫われており、表はもちろん、裏側まで見てみると、その凄みが一目瞭然です。

 

 

更には、設計する縫製仕様も構築的ですが、実際に洋服の端々にまで細かく手を入れられているため、とてつもなく強い構造。

 

 

 

僕自身はこれまでAraki Yuuの洋服の細部を見る度に、いつも感激してた。

 

 

 

明らかに”普通のレベル”とは違う。

 

 

 

それは、Araki Yuuでは、”ディテールを考える”という服のつくり方。

 

 

デザイナーが言うには、まず”洋服の仕様”を頭の中で考えて、それをどんどん具体的にして、形にしていくそうです。

 

 

しかし、一般的には、服が新たに製作される際には、大まかな”洋服のデザイン”が先にあって、それをゴールと設定します。

 

そのゴールに到達するために必要な仕様が”後から”決まってくるもの。

 

「こういう服をつくるなら、この縫製仕様で、この処理で」みたいな感じ。

 

重点を置かれるのは、いかにゴール地点(企画された完成像)まで、最短距離で到達できるのかということ。

 

加えて、その方法は多くの場合、再現性が高いものである。

 

 

そのため、洋服を形づくるための構造で、新たな方法のものが生まれてくることはないと思います。

 

 

ただ、Araki Yuuでは、そもそもの”洋服が誕生する道のり”が全然違う。

 

 

だから、完成した洋服は、見たことのないディテールや仕様で形づくられ、非常に凝った構造になっていることばかりである。

 

最終的に、1着の洋服は、”細部の集積”です。

 

 

そのような”細部の集積”により完成するAraki Yuuの洋服は、効率性を重視したものづくりでは決して真似できない領域のものであり、そこにとても価値があると思います。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

洋服ブランドは、通常は付属屋さんから仕入れるボタンも、Araki Yuuでは真鍮製のボタンを自らがつくり上げる。

 

一見すると、不規則でランダムにつくられたように見えますが、その精度もピカイチ。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

この写真は、数日を要する、オリジナルレシピでの加工中のボタン。

 

 

真鍮のプレートから独自の方法でボタンのベースをくり抜き、その後アトリエ内で、完成まで4つの工程を施してつくり上げるボタンである。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

真鍮ボタンを縫い付ける際には、レザーの力ボタンも裏側に配置するものも多い。

 

力ボタンでさえも、自らが手を加えます。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

レザーに穴を開け、それを不規則な丸型で、断面が台形になるようにカットするそう。

 

加えて、ボタンホールでさえも、シャツ以外はボタンホールミシンを使用せず、とても精緻なハンドホールを製作しています。

 

そこまでやり続けることはハンパじゃない。

 

 

恐ろしい程にまで凝った仕様のオンパレードである。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

アトリエスペースでは、裁断や縫製を行なう場所と、真鍮パーツの加工を行なう場所との空間が分けられていた。

 

 

長時間製作をしているため、移動することで頭が切り替わって良いんだ。と言っていました。

 

 

 

そして、そこにはこんなものが、、、

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

とても年季が入った金槌である。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

先端の鉄の形状が変化した金槌。

 

金属加工業をしていた荒木さんのおじいさんから譲り受けたというもので、これまでに一体どれほどの数を叩かれたのか、想像も付かないもの。

 

今でも大切に使い続けているもので、分野は違えど、代々にわたる”ものづくりの痕跡”を感じられました。

 

 

 

 

Araki Yuuの洋服をつくるために欠かせない工程の数々。

 

 

洋服を新たにつくる際には、全て頭で描き、先述のようにディテールから考え、自分で形にする。

 

 

その”細部の集積”として結果的に生まれる洋服は、クオリティが常に向上し、より複雑化しているようにまで感じます。

 

 

Araki Yuuでは、でき得るものづくりを全力で、”自分が100%信じられる”ようになるまで向き合っているそうです。

 

その姿は、まさに洋服づくりに尽くしていると言える。

 

 

大変だけど、自分で選んで進んできた道だからこそ、それをやり遂げたいと思っていると。

 

 

荒木さんの話を聞いていると、

 

 

”自分のすべきことは何か”

 

”自分ができる意味のあることとは何か”

 

 

といつも考えながら、日々製作に向き合っているそうです。

 

 

僕は、そのものづくりの姿勢に、人の心が動かされることを何度も目にしてきました。

 

 

ものづくりとは、ただでさえ大変な忍耐力が必要とされるものです。

 

 

更に、その中でも、非常に複雑で手が入り、文字通り時間をかけて、細かくつくりこまれたものを形にしています。

 

 

そのような荒木さんの精神が洋服に宿っているからこそ、洋服そのもので”人の心に触れる”ものが生み出されているのだろうと思います。

 

 

そういう意味では、現代におけるとても重要な存在のつくり手です。

 

 

 

流通する数こそ限られていますが、一点一点が高濃度なAraki Yuuの洋服。

Introducing Araki Yuu

Information about Araki Yuu is extremely limited. The brand used to hold exhibitions, but no longer does so today.
Only a small number of stores carry their pieces, making it a brand truly “shrouded in mystery.”

And yet, there is undoubtedly something profound embedded in each garment.

I touched on this briefly during a recent “Shop Talk” about LE BERGER, but due to a fortunate alignment of timing, I was able to carry and sell Araki Yuu’s garments over a period of six or seven years.

I also personally owned and wore their pieces, experiencing firsthand—both as a customer and as a seller—the exceptional quality of their craftsmanship. I’ve long been captivated by these garments.

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Araki Yuu’s atelier, where the clothing is made. It was a chance to once again feel the spirit and philosophy behind their craftsmanship.

We had arranged to meet at 9am, and by the time we realized how long we had been talking, it was already 5pm. Time had flown by.

Though little is publicly known about Araki Yuu, I hope that those already familiar with the brand will enjoy this deeper insight—and that those who aren’t will come to appreciate the existence of a creator like this.

After formally studying clothing, Araki Yuu gained experience in a sewing factory before eventually establishing the brand.

A key characteristic of the brand is that garments are made entirely by Araki Yuu and his wife.

The fabrics are developed in collaboration with some of Japan’s most skilled mills, and sometimes, Araki Yuu himself draws the weave structure to create fabrics with intricate and unique textures.

In the past, they used dobby looms to produce richly layered textiles, and now they are experimenting with even more innovative fabric techniques—something fans will no doubt find exciting.

Once the fabric is complete, the two of them continue the process by making the garments in their atelier.

While Araki Yuu is naturally involved, his wife also possesses sewing techniques honed not in casualwear factories, but in highly technical, detail-oriented environments.

That said, I don’t believe that “making it all yourself” is inherently the best way to create clothing—even though it sounds admirable and is often praised in the fashion world.

Clothing only comes into being after countless stages and processes.

There are craftspeople who have specialized in particular steps for decades. When their knowledge is brought together, the results can be garments of undeniably high quality.

When “high-level skill” meets “high-level skill,” combined with a shared creative vision, the outcome is something truly extraordinary.

What I believe is truly important is whether a garment needs to be made entirely by the designer in order to take its shape.

In the case of Araki Yuu, the answer is yes—his hands-on involvement results in garments that could not be realized through any other process.

Every time I’ve seen his work, I’ve been struck by the complexity and surprising construction of the garments—something only achievable through his direct craftsmanship.

Today, in Japan’s clothing industry, it feels as though the majority of garments are becoming increasingly simple or optimized for production efficiency.

It is brands like Araki Yuu that remind us of the value of true craftsmanship.

The quality of the finished garments speaks for itself. And when I spoke to customers on the sales floor, many were moved to make a purchase.

Even more notably, many who bought one piece went on to buy a second, a third, and more—becoming loyal repeat customers.

This, I believe, is because they came to love the garment even more after wearing it in daily life.

It’s not unusual to be satisfied with just one piece from a brand.

But both I and many customers found ourselves wanting more after owning just one item from Araki Yuu.

There are no flashy visuals or styled looks associated with the brand, and yet, people feel compelled to own the garments simply by seeing them.

This is remarkable—and a testament to the power Araki Yuu’s clothing holds to reach people’s hearts.

After visiting the atelier, I became convinced that this is because Araki Yuu’s attitude and spirit toward making clothes are fully embodied in each piece.

Let me share a glimpse into their production process.

As mentioned, everything except the weaving of the fabric is done in-house.

Patterns are drafted by Araki Yuu himself. Thanks to his 3.5 years of experience cutting fabric in a sewing factory, he also does the cutting himself.

Due to the intricate garment specifications, pattern shapes are unique. To align the grain, he measures the distance from the fabric’s edge to the pattern’s centerline with precision—a meticulous approach.

Here is a look at the sewing process.

Every part is sewn beautifully. Looking not only at the outside but also at the inside, one can instantly sense the extraordinary craftsmanship.

The sewing construction is both complex and sturdy—every edge is carefully handled.

I’ve often been amazed by the attention to detail in Araki Yuu’s clothing.

It is clearly not “ordinary.”

Their approach is rooted in thinking through the details of the garment.

According to the designer, he begins by imagining the specifications of the garment, then gradually brings them to life.

By contrast, in conventional fashion design, the overall look is often envisioned first, and the specifications are determined afterward to reach that goal efficiently and reproducibly.

But at Araki Yuu, the entire approach is different from the start.

As a result, the completed garments are full of never-before-seen details and construction techniques.

In the end, a garment is an accumulation of details.

The pieces created by Araki Yuu, born from such detail-focused craftsmanship, cannot be replicated by efficiency-driven methods. That’s where their value lies.

Even the buttons—usually sourced from suppliers—are handmade from brass by Araki Yuu.

They may appear irregular or random at first glance, but their precision is exceptional.

This photo shows buttons undergoing a multi-day finishing process using an original recipe.

The brass plates are punched into button bases and undergo four atelier-based steps before completion.

Even the “support buttons” sewn behind the brass ones are crafted in-house. The leather is hole-punched and cut by hand into irregular round shapes with trapezoidal cross-sections.

Except for shirts, the buttonholes are hand-stitched—not made with a buttonhole machine—and executed with remarkable precision.

This level of detail is astonishing.

The atelier is divided into zones: one for cutting and sewing, and another for processing brass parts.

Because the work is so intense and prolonged, moving between spaces helps reset the mind, they say.

And then—there it was: a well-worn hammer.

Its iron head has changed shape from years of use—one can only imagine how many times it has struck.

You could feel the traces of their craftsmanship embedded in its form.

Each step of the process is indispensable to making Araki Yuu’s garments.

New garments are conceived in the mind, developed from the details, and then brought to life by hand.

This accumulation of details results in ever-evolving, ever-more-complex garments.

At Araki Yuu, they give their all to the process—striving to create something they can believe in 100%.

It is a life wholly dedicated to making clothes.

Though challenging, Araki Yuu said that because it’s the path he chose, he wants to see it through.

Listening to him speak made me reflect on questions like:

• What is the work I am truly meant to do?
• What can I uniquely contribute?

I’ve witnessed firsthand how his approach to craftsmanship moves people.

Craftsmanship demands extraordinary patience to begin with.

Within that, Araki Yuu creates intricate, time-consuming garments—truly built with care.

It is this spirit, infused into the clothing, that allows it to genuinely touch the hearts of those who encounter it.

In that sense, he is a truly important creator for our times.

Though production quantities are limited, each Araki Yuu garment is rich in detail and spirit.
