上記の期間に先駆けて、こちらのshop talkでもDAN TOMIMATSUについて、少しご紹介をさせて頂きます。

 

 

 

 

 

まず、DAN TOMIMATSUについては、コレクションのラインナップも多岐に渡るため、直接的にそのジュエリーコレクションを紹介することを通して、ブランドの概要をお伝えしようと考えていました。

 

しかし、知れば知るほどに、非常に特殊なジュエリーブランドである性質上、まずはデザイナーの富松 暖さんご自身について記載し、紹介をさせて頂き、その歩みを少し知って頂けることが一つのきっかけになると思い、今回はそのような内容で掲載を致します。

 

 

 

 

 

 

デザイナーの富松 暖さんは、多摩美術大学を卒業。

 

そこでは、最初に義手や義足などのデザインに興味を持ち、自らのデザインで、困っている人を助けることができないかと考えていたそうです。

 

当時、暖さんが研究していたのは「欠損した部分を補うためのデザイン」というもの。

 

そして、年々その研究範囲を拡大させていくと、服に研究対象が移行していったそうです。

 

それは、元来、多くの体毛で覆われていた人間がその”体毛を失ったために、体温調節が難しくなり、服が必要になった”という考えによるもの。

つまりは、”服”は失われた体毛、表皮を補っていると。

 

当時は、ファッションも義手や義足と同じようにデザインしても良いんじゃないかと。と研究を続けていたそうです。

 

 

その時から暖さんは、義手や義足、服においても「失われたものを補う」という物理的な機能面だけではなく、それによってもたらされる、もう一つのこと。

 

“精神的な作用”にとても惹かれたと言われています。

 

服は、落ち込んでいる時に明るくなるとか、元気になるというような精神的にポジティブな作用があり、義手や義足も腕や脚を失ったという”心のダメージを補う作用”があると。

 

それがデザイナー、富松 暖さんの礎となり、“心に働きかけ、作用するデザイン”とは何か。

 

そのことが現代において、最も表現されるものは何か。

 

と考えた際に、物理的な機能を持たない”ジュエリー”という存在は、”身に着けたい”という精神性を表現しているものである。という考えに至ったそうです。

 

 

大学を卒業後に、イタリアのドムスアカデミーという大学院へ進学、卒業をしているそうですが、帰国後に初めて製作をしたジュエリーが、DAN TOMIMATSUを今でも代表する一つでもある”Rubber Band Bracelet”。

 

それをつくって展示されたそうです。

 

それが今から15年以上も前のことに遡ります。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

DAN TOMIMATSUのコレクションを代表する一つ。

 

“Rubber Band Bracelet”

 

 

今から15年以上も前にデザインされたものであるのにも関わらず、その時間の経過を微塵も感じさせないのは、現代においてとてもすごいことだと感じます。

 

洋服はもちろん、他のジュエリーや、アクセサリーでも、15年以上前にデザイン設計をされたものは、時間の経過をどうしても感じさせてしまうものがほとんどだと思います。

 

でも、上記のDAN TOMIMATSUでデザインされたジュエリーは、そうではない。

 

また、そのことは後日記載をできればと思いますが、身に着けるもので、そのように”時間を超越している”ように感じさせるものは、なかなか出会うことができないのではないかと思います。

 

 

 

加えて、更に、大学院のドムスアカデミーでは、”デザイン”という枠組みの中には、ファッションも建築も、インテリアも全部含まれているという考え方だったそうです。

 

 

そのことが”デザイナー 富松 暖さん”につながる。

 

 

このshop talkでは、ジュエリーブランド DAN TOMIMATSUについて紹介させて頂きますが、、、

 

 

富松 暖さんの活動を、最も象徴することがDAN TOMIMATSUであり、

 

 

“ジュエリーデザイナーだけではなく、デザイナーとして多面的に活動している富松 暖さん”だからこそ、

 

 

DAN TOMIMATSUという”視点を変えた多様なジュエリーコレクション”が存在しています。

 

 

 

つまり、ジュエリーだけではなく、多彩な活動をしていることが

 

“DAN TOMIMATSUがDAN TOMIMATSUとなっている理由”であると言えるかもしれません。

 

 

 

 

暖さんは、小学生の頃から、奈良県吉野郡吉野町に住まれ、現在もそこを拠点に、株式会社kanaを運営しています。

 

 

僕自身も、学生時代に7年間奈良県に住んでいたことがあり、大学の授業の一環で吉野町に行ったことがあるのですが、とてもとても自然豊かな地域でした。

 

 

そこで、株式会社kanaの活動をしています。

 

DAN TOMIMATSUでは、自身が伝えていきたいこと、やるべきこと、成し遂げたいと考えていることをジュエリーを通して行なっている。

 

kanaの事業でも、吉野町の木材を使って、その産業を未来に繋いでいくために国内外のクライアントと仕事をすることや、その地域の子どもたちのために何ができるのか、大切なことを伝えていくために知育教育の活動をするなど、ご自身が思っていることをkanaという会社を通して取り組んでいるそうです。

 

 

 

DAN TOMIMATSUは、それぞれのジュエリーが様々な視点からデザインをされ、いろんな表情を持つブランド。

 

 

例えるならば、見る人によっては、DAN TOMIMATSUのコレクションを考える際には、Rubber Band Braceletを真っ先に思い浮かべる方がいると思います。

 

それがまた少し詳しい、別の方であれば、DISSOLVEコレクションのSignet Ringを思い浮かべる方もいるのではないかと思います。

 

 

複数あるコレクションの中でも、ブランドの”代表作”、”顔”と捉えられるものが人によって異なるほどに、多様な表情を持ち、幅と奥行きを持つのがDAN TOMIMATSUの大きな特徴だと思います。

 

 

その理由は、先述のように、プロダクトデザインや、ソーシャルデザイン、日本の伝統工芸を現代に合わせてデザインするなど、思考を変えて、多方面で活動をしているデザイナーだからこそのもの。

 

 

ただ、全てのジュエリーに共通していることは、「心に作用するジュエリー」であるということ。

 

 

僕は、DAN TOMIMATSUを6年間ほどですが、販売をしていたことがあり、それは自分が身に着ける上でも、販売を通じても強く体感をしてきました。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“UNBOUND (アンバウンド)”

 

ブランドで最初にデザインされたRubber Band BraceletをはじめとしたUNBOUND。

 

輪ゴムをはじめとした、日常生活で当たり前に身近にあるものをジュエリーに昇華したコレクション。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“DISSLVE (ディゾルブ)”

 

[溶ける・融解する]という意味を持つ、DISSOLVE。

 

何千年もの長い年月を経て、発生する現象を意図的に人の手で再現したもの。

 

今までにない革新的な方法で製作をされた現代の工芸技法と言えるコレクション。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“ENLINK (エンリンク)”

 

日本最古のものとして正倉院に収められる金の糸。

 

その技術を新たなものとして生まれ変わらせ、デザイナーのルーツと現代を繋げるという試みのもと生まれたコレクション。

 

 

 

この3つのコレクションに代表されるように、それぞれのスタート地点から視点を変え、思考を変えて、製作されるDAN TOMIMATSUのジュエリー。

 

 

この他にもバリエーションは展開されていますが、ブランドのコレクションのどれもに共通することが、一見すると、とても”無機質”に見えるということ。

 

見た目のディテールは、極限まで削って、落とされ、とてもシャープ。

 

 

しかし、実際に身に着け続けると、決して無機質ばかりではない。

 

 

そこには、独特の余白が残されていることを感じ、そして、それに加えて温度感があるように思います。

 

 

だから、DAN TOMIMATSUのジュエリーは、身に着けるとどんどん好きになってくるし、一つを所有すると、時間をかけてでも、他のコレクションも所有したいと感じられるもの。

 

 

それは、コレクションのバリエーションがたくさん存在し、そのどれもがとても高いクオリティであることも一つの要因かもしれませんが、それだけではなく、ジュエリーそのものに宿されたデザイナーの富松 暖さんの思考に由来するのではないかと考えています。

 

 

DAN TOMIMATSUで形づくられる小さなジュエリーには、まるで大きな器のような余白が設けられ、そこに所有者とジュエリーとが一緒に過ごす歳月が記憶される。

 

 

そのような精神性が感じられ、次第に所有者の心までも宿るのがDAN TOMIMATSUのジュエリーです。

 

 

 

 

そして、冒頭に記載をしたように今回のバイヤーの方向け展示会と、一般の方向けのLimited Storeでは、ブランドとして、公式に新たなコレクションが発表されます。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“SET” と名付けられたコレクション。

 

日本で生まれ、日本でものづくりをしていく中で、日本の職人と行き着いた境地と言えるコレクションが誕生しています。

 

 

いろんな”顔”があるDAN TOMIMATSUの中に、また新たなものが誕生しました。

Ahead of the above dates, I would like to share a brief introduction to DAN TOMIMATSU here on shop talk.

 

To begin with, because DAN TOMIMATSU offers a wide-ranging lineup of collections, my initial intention was to introduce the brand through a direct presentation of its jewelry collection.

However, the more I came to know, the more I realized that it is a remarkably unique jewelry brand. Given this nature, I believe that a meaningful starting point would be to first introduce the designer himself, Dan Tomimatsu, and to share a bit of his journey. With that in mind, this post will focus on providing an introduction to the designer behind the brand.

 

Designer Dan Tomimatsu is a graduate of Tama Art University.

In the beginning, he was particularly interested in the design of prosthetic limbs—arms and legs—and was driven by the desire to use design as a way to help people facing physical challenges.

At the time, what he was researching was “design that compensates for what is missing.”

As his research deepened and expanded, his focus gradually shifted to clothing. This transition stemmed from the idea that human beings, once covered in thick body hair, began wearing clothes as a necessity after losing that hair—essentially, clothing serves to replace our lost body covering and regulate body temperature.

In this sense, he began to see clothing as a design solution that compensates for lost body functions, just like prosthetics.

Even then, Tomimatsu was fascinated not only by the physical functionality of prosthetics or clothing that “compensates for loss,” but also by the emotional impact they carry.

Clothing, for example, can uplift a person when they’re feeling down, or bring about a sense of confidence. Likewise, prosthetics serve to mend the emotional trauma of losing a limb—not just the physical one.

This idea became the foundation of Dan Tomimatsu’s design philosophy: What does it mean to design something that touches and affects the heart?

When he asked himself what best expresses this idea in today’s world—what best symbolizes design that does not fulfill a physical need but instead reflects a desire to wear something—his answer was jewelry.

After graduating from Tama Art University, Tomimatsu went on to complete his postgraduate studies at Domus Academy in Italy. Upon returning to Japan, he created his first piece of jewelry: the Rubber Band Bracelet, which to this day remains one of the defining items of the DAN TOMIMATSU brand.

That was more than 15 years ago.

 

One of the most iconic pieces from DAN TOMIMATSU’s collection is the “Rubber Band Bracelet.”

Despite having been designed over 15 years ago, this bracelet shows no signs of aging—a remarkable feat in today’s context. Most jewelry, accessories, or garments designed over a decade ago inevitably reflect the passage of time. But the pieces from DAN TOMIMATSU feel completely timeless.

That sense of “transcending time” is rare in wearable design, and it’s something I’ll touch on in more detail in a future post.

Additionally, during his time at Domus Academy in Milan, Tomimatsu was immersed in a broader, interdisciplinary definition of “design,” one that encompassed fashion, architecture, interiors, and more. This framework significantly shaped who Dan Tomimatsu is today—not just as a jewelry designer, but as a multi-faceted designer and thinker.

While this Shop Talk article focuses on the jewelry brand DAN TOMIMATSU, it is equally important to understand that DAN TOMIMATSU is an expression of designer Dan Tomimatsu himself. His diverse perspective as a designer is what allows the brand to continually explore new dimensions of jewelry.

In other words, DAN TOMIMATSU is defined not only by the jewelry it creates, but by the broader creative vision that informs it.

Tomimatsu grew up in Yoshino Town, Yoshino District in Nara Prefecture, and continues to be based there, running a company called kana Inc. I personally spent seven years living in Nara as a student, and I remember visiting Yoshino for a university class—an area rich in nature and deeply rooted in Japanese tradition.

At kana, Tomimatsu undertakes a wide range of creative projects. Through DAN TOMIMATSU, he expresses his personal convictions, ambitions, and messages through jewelry. At the same time, kana also works to carry the traditions of Yoshino’s timber industry into the future through partnerships with domestic and international clients. The company also explores educational initiatives for local children, emphasizing creativity and the values he holds dear.

DAN TOMIMATSU is a jewelry brand with depth and multiplicity—each piece designed from unique perspectives and bearing its own expression.

For instance, depending on who you ask, the first piece that comes to mind might be the Rubber Band Bracelet. For others more familiar with the collection, it might be the Signet Ring from the DISSOLVE collection. This variety of “faces” that represent the brand to different people speaks to its diversity and richness.

This breadth comes from Tomimatsu’s experience in product design, social design, and reinterpreting Japanese craftsmanship through a contemporary lens. It’s his cross-disciplinary thinking that fuels such range and nuance.

And yet, there’s one unifying thread running through all of his work:

Every piece of jewelry he creates is meant to resonate emotionally.

Having spent six years offering DAN TOMIMATSU jewelry to clients, and wearing it myself, I can say with certainty—this is something you feel. It’s jewelry that truly touches the heart.

 

“UNBOUND”

The UNBOUND collection, which began with the design of the Rubber Band Bracelet, was the brand’s first.
It reimagines everyday items—like rubber bands, so familiar in daily life—as jewelry.

 

“DISSOLVE”

DISSOLVE means “to melt” or “to dissolve.”
This collection intentionally recreates natural processes that typically occur over thousands of years—reproduced by human hands.
It represents a modern take on craftsmanship, achieved through an innovative approach that has never been seen before.

 

“ENLINK”

ENLINK is inspired by Japan’s oldest known golden threads, preserved in the Shōsōin Repository.
This collection revives those traditional techniques and connects them to the present, bridging the designer’s roots with contemporary design.

 

As reflected in these three collections, each piece of DAN TOMIMATSU jewelry originates from a distinct point of view—each created through a shift in perspective and thought.

While there are many other collections as well, what remains consistent throughout the brand is that the jewelry may appear, at first glance, almost austere or minimal.
The visual detailing is stripped down to the bare essentials—extremely sharp and refined.

However, once worn over time, you begin to realize that these pieces are not cold or sterile.
They contain a unique sense of space—an intentional openness—and carry a quiet warmth.

This is why DAN TOMIMATSU jewelry has such lasting appeal.
Once you own a piece, you’ll likely find yourself gradually drawn to other pieces in the collection—eager to experience more.

Certainly, the breadth and consistently high quality of the collections are part of the reason.
But beyond that, the allure lies in the philosophy embedded in each piece—the thinking of designer Dan Tomimatsu.

Every small piece of DAN TOMIMATSU jewelry seems to hold the spaciousness of a large vessel—inviting the wearer to imbue it with time, memory, and meaning.

It is jewelry that carries a quiet spirituality, ultimately becoming a vessel for the owner’s spirit as well.

As mentioned at the beginning, both the upcoming exhibition for buyers and the Limited Store for the public will serve as the official launch of DAN TOMIMATSU’s new collection.

 

A new collection titled “SET” has been born.

Created in Japan, through a journey of thoughtful making alongside Japanese artisans, this collection represents a culmination—an arrival at a deeply rooted and refined point of expression.

Within the many “faces” of DAN TOMIMATSU, this marks yet another new beginning.
