<\/p>\n <\/p>\n MotivMfg to Hold Its First Buyer Exhibition in Japan in Years Starting Tomorrow<\/strong><\/p>\n I recently had the opportunity to preview the collection at the brand\u2019s showroom in Paris.<\/p>\n Back in January, they showcased their FW25 collection. And just a few days ago at the end of June, the SS26 collection.<\/p>\n Seeing a full year\u2019s worth of MotivMfg collections left me with no doubt: Moreover, I truly believe this brand has the potential to open up entirely new paths<\/em> in multiple ways.<\/p>\n I started to reflect on why I personally felt this so strongly.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Unique Foundations of MotivMfg<\/strong><\/p>\n Daniel, a technician raised in a family of tailors, and Samuel, who built the heritage market in China and infuses his retail experience into the brand \u2014 To be frank, there is no brand in Japan quite like this.<\/strong> This has to do, at least in part, with the unique background of a brand committed to serious craftsmanship in China.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n China\u2019s Role in Apparel Manufacturing and Its Transformation<\/strong><\/p>\n As many in their 30s and 40s will recall, clothing labeled Made in China<\/em> came to dominate the apparel market from a certain point onward.<\/p>\n Production bases in the apparel industry began shifting to China in the early 1990s. Around the same time, Japan\u2019s fashion industry began facing economic headwinds. The result: not only Japan, but also developed nations worldwide began investing heavily in Chinese production, bringing with them their own technologies, equipment, and expertise.<\/p>\n China’s total export value of industrial products (not limited to apparel) grew from $8.7 billion in 1980 to $175 billion by the late 1990s \u2014 an astonishing leap in less than 20 years.<\/p>\n In essence, Western countries and Japan helped nurture China\u2019s manufacturing capabilities.<\/strong><\/p>\n But this massive growth brought economic shifts within China as well \u2014 wages and costs rose, and the production landscape began migrating to other countries.<\/p>\n As overseas enterprises left, Chinese manufacturers began turning their focus inward<\/strong>, aiming to:<\/p>\n This is the environment in which MotivMfg thrives: <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Extraordinary Textiles and Techniques<\/strong><\/p>\n Deadstock Silk Fabric:<\/strong> China, a nation historically renowned for silk, can no longer reproduce this fabric. A textile mill that had carefully preserved this fabric allowed MotivMfg to use it, saying, \u201cBecause we support what you do.\u201d <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Double-Faced Linen and Reversible Construction<\/strong><\/p>\n A 100% linen double weave using binding yarns of different colors for front and back. To maximize the fabric\u2019s characteristics, it was designed to be reversible. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Linen Cut-and-Sew Innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n A jersey made with 100% linen. Here, they apply a special treatment<\/em>, usually reserved for other fibers, to achieve necessary elasticity. This process, according to the factory that collaborated with MotivMfg, is \u201csomething no one else in the world can do.\u201d <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Highly Technical Series<\/strong><\/p>\n Items on this rack are part of an extremely technical series. The result?<\/p>\n All of this is combined with Daniel\u2019s intricate patterning \u2014 a complex structure layered upon another. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Denim Series<\/strong><\/p>\n Herringbone denim:<\/p>\n All pieces use only single-needle stitching. <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Beyond \u201cMade in China\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n What I\u2019ve shared above is just a fraction of the full collection. For a long time, Made in China<\/em> came with a stigma. I too, admittedly, shared that bias.<\/p>\n But the right question is not: Even garments made in Europe or Japan can feel soulless and overly industrial. What truly matters is: MotivMfg garments exude something inherently unique to this brand.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n From One Buyer to Another<\/strong><\/p>\n As a former buyer myself, I always wanted to bring something truly new into the fashion scene. \nThese garments are ones that can, and will, resonate deeply with many people in Japan.<\/strong><\/p>\n
\nTogether, they have built a brand that earnestly engages in manufacturing in China.<\/p>\n
\nAnd as much as it pains me to say, given the level of quality and direction MotivMfg pursues, I think it would be extremely difficult for a similar brand to emerge in Japan.<\/strong><\/p>\n
\nAccording to some sources, in 1993, factory workers in China earned about 4,000 yen per month.
\nThe cost of living was 1\/10 to 1\/20 of Japan\u2019s.<\/p>\n
\nMeanwhile, China was pushing forward its International Great Economic Circulation Strategy<\/em> proposed in 1987, which led to a national push to attract foreign companies.<\/p>\n\n
\na brand working alongside highly skilled, talented people in China, using what they\u2019ve cultivated to deliver remarkable collections.<\/strong><\/p>\n
\nThis is the only deadstock fabric used in the collection \u2014 a rare piece combining filament silk for the warp and a unique silk yarn for the weft, one I had never heard of before.<\/p>\n
\nIt was originally developed in the 1980s to replicate vintage silk textiles using the highest level of technology at the time.<\/p>\n
\nBoth the design and comfort are exceptional \u2014 and Daniel has tailored this fabric with the precision of a master.<\/p>\n
\nThe texture, surface touch, and airiness of the linen fabric alone convey comfort just by looking at it.<\/p>\n
\nFlat-felled seams were used to avoid any sense of hierarchy between inside and out, resulting in a finish with no bulky seams or irregularities.<\/p>\n
\nLinen, lacking natural elasticity, is typically unsuitable for stretchy garments.<\/p>\n
\nDespite this, the fabric remains thin and breathable \u2014 a jersey so light and airy, it feels like wind could pass through it.<\/p>\n
\nI was stunned.<\/p>\n
\nUsing special looms unique to China, they repeatedly modify wool yarns to achieve a density beyond what\u2019s normally considered \u201chigh density.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
\nSo complex, in fact, it\u2019s difficult to decipher at a glance.<\/p>\n\n
\nThe spacing between stitch points and the precision of the stitch density are remarkable.
\nEven just looking at the stitchwork on this fabric makes it look exceptionally cool.<\/p>\n
\nThere\u2019s still so much more to see in what MotivMfg has created.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhere was this made?\u201d<\/strong>
\nIt is:
\n\u201cWho made this, and with what intention?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
\nThey may not move us or inspire wonder.<\/p>\n
\nDoes the finished product stir your heart?
\nDoes it have an irreplaceable, undeniable presence?<\/strong><\/p>\n
\nBut it had to be something I could logically and emotionally support in terms of quality.<\/p>\n\n
\nBut I sincerely hope that buyers in Japan \u2014 those who are willing to question preconceived notions and deliver authenticity \u2014 will take the time to view this collection.<\/p>\n
\nThere\u2019s something you\u2019ll inevitably feel.<\/p>\n
\nIf you miss it, the next chance will be six months from now.<\/p>\n
