<\/p>\n As we’ve mentioned before, COTTLE is currently hosting both a domestic exhibition and a made-to-order sales event open to the general public.<\/p>\n Since the public event started this past Monday, the final two days fall on the weekend\u2014Saturday and Sunday\u2014so if your schedule allows, we truly hope you\u2019ll come and take a look at COTTLE.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve written several times about COTTLE here on shop talk, but because it\u2019s such an expansive brand in terms of its collection, what I\u2019ve shared so far only scratches the surface.<\/p>\n That said, the official COTTLE website has a wonderful and detailed section called \u201cDictionary\u201d that offers deep insight into the collection, and I highly recommend taking a look there.<\/p>\n As for myself, I\u2019ve been selling COTTLE since about four years ago at my previous select shop, and I also wear their garments regularly, so I\u2019ve come to truly appreciate their quality on many levels.<\/p>\n So today, I\u2019d like to introduce just one of the things I personally find incredibly compelling about COTTLE.<\/p>\n That is: This detail has always fascinated me.<\/p>\n To be more specific, this refers to flat-felled seams<\/strong>.<\/p>\n When flat-felled seams are used, the standard width from the fabric edge varies depending on the garment part\u2014typically around 5mm, 8mm, or 10mm.<\/p>\n However, with COTTLE, that width is often about half<\/strong> of what\u2019s considered standard.<\/p>\n They design their clothing in-house, create samples at their own sewing factory in Okayama, and manufacture the actual garments in the same place.<\/p>\n I remember Watanabe-san from COTTLE once said that even if details and specifications are fixed at the design or sampling stage, they often discover better ways of doing things during the actual production process.<\/p>\n When that happens, they immediately adjust course and improve.<\/p>\n Because they maintain this approach, their garments often feature technical details that are incredibly difficult to realize under normal manufacturing conditions\u2014including the one we\u2019re discussing here: the narrow stitch width from the fabric edge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n But of course, it\u2019s not as if \u201cthe finer the seam allowance or the tighter the stitches, the better\u201d<\/strong> by default.<\/p>\n In other words, \u201cfiner doesn\u2019t always mean superior.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n That said, I can\u2019t help but feel that many in the clothing industry have grown complacent with this idea, and have stopped attempting to reach those \u201cheights\u201d of craftsmanship.<\/p>\n There are also real drawbacks\u2014for example, in the case of soft, airy, or lightweight fabrics where fineness is the main appeal, a tight seam allowance or dense stitching can actually harden the seams and compromise the fabric\u2019s charm.<\/p>\n But COTTLE, as a brand, is deeply rooted in the philosophy of Mingei<\/strong>, or “craft for everyday life.”<\/p>\n For example, in this shop talk feature, we photographed a piece made from a fabric called LEAF VEIN<\/strong>\u2014a material developed to be astonishingly durable.<\/p>\n Given the ruggedness of the fabric, the sewing approach is not about creating a soft finish, but rather about painstaking precision and fine construction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n One result of that commitment is precisely this: I personally love intricate, fine, and complex details\u2014and COTTLE garments reflect that sensibility through and through.<\/p>\n The piece we photographed this time is the TAILOR MADE SHIRT from the LEAF VEIN series<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Some even have a 3mm<\/strong> seam width.<\/p>\n These are areas that are typically 7mm to 10mm<\/strong>, so COTTLE is pushing well below half of that.<\/p>\n In COTTLE\u2019s shirts, the armhole stitch width<\/strong> from the fabric edge is especially impressive to me.<\/p>\n And the reason why also lies in what\u2019s hidden\u2014on the inside<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Inside the armhole is a piping made from Hige Tsumugi<\/strong>, a rare fabric born in Shiga Prefecture and associated with Mingei thought.<\/p>\n Sewing an armhole\u2014where the body and sleeve curve in opposite directions\u2014using such a narrow flat-felled seam is already a high-level challenge.<\/p>\n But to add Hige Tsumugi piping<\/strong> on top of that and still maintain such a narrow allowance is truly remarkable.<\/p>\n Thanks to the piping, the armhole seam appears visually elevated<\/strong> and more three-dimensional.<\/p>\n To me, that\u2019s an incredible kind of beauty.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s how it looks from the inside as well.<\/p>\n You can also see the narrow seam allowances in the armholes, the front-body-to-yoke transition, and the collar attachment\u2014all beautifully executed.<\/p>\n So fine.<\/p>\n So moving.<\/p>\n Here’s another photo\u2014this time of the back yoke and back body transition<\/strong> from the inside.<\/p>\n In a previous write-up about the EARTH WALL fabric, I mentioned that the LEAF VEIN fabric has a thickness of 0.41mm<\/strong> (similar to a shirt jacket).<\/p>\n Even with such a thick fabric, the gathering areas are sewn cleanly and delicately.<\/p>\n And the photo shows the back side<\/strong>\u2014which is important.<\/p>\n Normally garments are sewn from the outside, meaning the reverse side isn\u2019t visible and the stitching can go off-track. But here, even the reverse side is sewn beautifully and consistently with a narrow seam allowance. It\u2019s honestly awe-inspiring.<\/p>\n And now we come to the cuff.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve been focusing mainly on the narrow stitch width because I wanted to highlight that above all\u2014but the truth is, what makes COTTLE special is not just that their garments are sturdy.<\/p>\n It\u2019s that every detail reflects the brand\u2019s philosophy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Instead of the conventional cuff design for shirts, the cuffs are triple-folded and hand-stitched (hand-blind stitched)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Some people like to roll up or fold back their shirt cuffs, and with this design, the cuff feels soft against the skin when turned up, making it especially comfortable to wear.<\/p>\n And here\u2019s me today.<\/p>\n I\u2019m wearing a LEAF VEIN set-up in the \u201cFERMENTATION\u201d colorway<\/strong>, which I\u2019ve loved since my sales staff days.<\/p>\n The top is the TAILOR MADE SHIRT<\/strong>, which I\u2019ve worn for about four years now<\/strong>. I don\u2019t like dirt building up on the inside of the collar, so I\u2019ve washed it more than 300 times<\/strong>, easily. And yet, the fabric and construction have held up remarkably well.<\/p>\n I’ve worn it so much that I even asked Watanabe-san of COTTLE to re-dye<\/strong> the FERMENTATION color for me. It\u2019s a garment I\u2019ve kept wearing without ever growing tired of it\u2014and I still feel its excellence every time I put it on.<\/p>\n Now, if you look closely at this photo, you\u2019ll see it.<\/p>\n The narrow width of the armhole\u2019s flat-felled seam.<\/p>\n It\u2019s the kind of detail you might not notice when worn\u2014but these things matter.<\/p>\n Even if you don\u2019t consciously notice them, a garment is always the sum of its parts\u2014a collection of such tiny, meticulous elements<\/strong>.<\/p>\n And that\u2019s what makes COTTLE so compelling\u2014the fact that they continue to create clothing in their own factory, always prioritizing this kind of attention to detail.<\/p>\n Sewing is a part of virtually all clothing production.<\/p>\n Yet it\u2019s one of the least-discussed elements.<\/p>\n But in truth, who sews<\/strong> a garment changes it entirely.
