For more on Laurent\u2019s career, you can visit galerie a\u2019s website or Instagram. <\/p>\n Why Laurent Uses Crocodile<\/strong><\/p>\n Akiyoshi once saw two of Laurent\u2019s personal bags, each used by Laurent and his wife for around 10 years\u2014one made of crocodile leather, the other of calfskin.<\/p>\n The difference in the accumulation of wear over time was striking. This is why crocodile has long been revered as a top-tier luxury leather\u2014not just for its rarity, but for its exceptional durability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n One of Laurent\u2019s main reasons for using crocodile is exactly this: he wants his work to be passed down through generations. Crocodile, carefully chosen to his standards, is the material that can truly fulfill that wish.<\/p>\n I imagine it must be deeply satisfying to use such a piece over many years and feel that enduring quality firsthand.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n How ACCALMIE Selects Its Crocodile Leather<\/strong><\/p>\n Depending on the size of the bag being made, Laurent uses different sizes of crocodile hides:<\/p>\n This is not the industry\u2019s standard practice. But ACCALMIE instead selects the hide size to perfectly match the intended product<\/strong>. As far as I know, this is the most luxurious way to make a crocodile bag. <\/p>\n Examples from Past and Current Exhibitions<\/strong><\/p>\n In photos from Laurent\u2019s past solo show Timeless<\/em>, you can clearly see the large, central belly scales transitioning evenly toward the sides. Laurent personally selects his crocodile hides before dyeing. The bags are then hand-stitched using deadstock French linen thread<\/strong> and tools he has gradually customized over time\u2014built in the traditional sellier<\/em> (saddlery) style. <\/p>\n Experiencing This Craft in the Current Exhibition<\/strong><\/p>\n At VERTIGE<\/em>, the scope for experiencing Laurent\u2019s craftsmanship and his chosen crocodile leather has broadened. The NEGRIL has appeared before, but only as an occasional ready-made piece. The REVAGE, meanwhile, is made from leftovers of smaller hides used for small bags. <\/p>\n Until now, crocodile leather was a material I had written off as belonging solely to the realm of unattainable luxury. Whether or not I\u2019ll have the chance, given the limited numbers and the prestige of the material, is uncertain. <\/p>\n <Brand Profile><\/strong><\/p>\n ACCALMIE\u2019s craftsmanship draws on the traditional skills of French saddlery, using deadstock linen thread. \nWhat I\u2019d like to share here is specifically about the crocodile leather used in ACCALMIE.<\/p>\n
\nThe calfskin had inevitably developed fatigue and scuffing, while the crocodile still retained its surface sheen and firmness. The visual contrast was so dramatic, it was hard to believe both bags had lived through the same decade.<\/p>\n\n
\nTypically, a tannery prepares a hide of a certain size, and then a variety of bags and small goods are cut from it.<\/p>\n
\nThis ensures that the center of the bag always features the crocodile\u2019s belly\u2014the area where the scale patterns are largest and most even\u2014allowing the patterns to transition symmetrically toward the sides<\/strong>.
\nAnd this alignment is achieved for both the front and back panels.<\/p>\n
\nFrom a single hide, one bag is created. Even the offcuts are used\u2014turned into handles, side panels, piping, and more.<\/p>\n
\nThe same beauty can be seen in the pieces presented in his current exhibition, VERTIGE<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\nThat\u2019s because Laurent usually prepares crocodile hides for making bags, using the central belly area. Occasionally, after making a bag, some of the upper \u201cneck\u201d area remains, and it\u2019s from this leftover leather that NEGRIL is made.
\nThis keeps the same level of quality while offering a much lower price point.<\/p>\n
\nThis is the first time both items are available to order, each with limited production based on available leather stocks.
\nOrders can even specify color combinations for both the outer leather and lining\u2014making it tempting to choose something entirely unique.<\/p>\n
\nBut learning all this transformed it into something I now genuinely want to hold in my hands\u2014something I want to experience for myself.<\/p>\n
\nStill, I wanted to write this Shop Talk so that those reading might discover something new about crocodile leather and Laurent\u2019s craft.<\/p>\n
\nIts creations use only natural leather, linen thread, acacia resin, and the bare minimum of hardware.

\nThere, he worked in the luxury leather cutting atelier, handling crocodile and lizard skins, and later also served as a buyer.
