Kota Gushiken is a Tokyo-based knitwear brand.
\nDesigner Kota Gushiken studied knitwear at Central Saint Martins (CSM) in London and presents knit collections that move between art and everyday life \u2013 conceptual, yet gentle on the body and uplifting to the spirit.
\nHis CSM graduation collection was selected by The Business of Fashion<\/em> as one of the \u201cTop 6 Central Saint Martins BA Graduates of 2016,\u201d and his work has attracted international recognition since his student years.
\nIn addition to this proven skill in garment making, he is known for his warm, sociable personality and is surrounded by creative friends and collaborators not only in Japan but across the world.<\/p>\n

Kota Gushiken is built around the concept of \u201cknitwear for human beings.\u201d
\nIt is a knitwear collection created for everyone, regardless of age, gender, or nationality.<\/p>\n

The designer says, \u201cKnitwear is a very free medium that can create any kind of pattern, texture, or three-dimensional surface.\u201d
\nTrue to those words, each collection turns the things he finds beautiful, intriguing, and exciting in his daily life into knitwear.
\nThese ideas do not come only from the journey of building a collection\u2014such as discovering exceptional materials while collaborating with factories across Japan on knit production.
\nThey also spring from his uniquely sociable and multi-faceted perspective: encounters with people, music, artworks, and many other experiences in everyday life all become sources of inspiration.<\/p>\n

Because so many personal aspects of the designer are strongly reflected in the knitwear, a singular world that exists only in Kota Gushiken is knitted into each piece.
\nThis is why those who see and wear the garments feel such a strong attraction to this deeply personal universe.

How the knitwear is made<\/strong><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

There is no compromise in the way Kota Gushiken\u2019s collections are created. To bring the designer\u2019s ideal knitwear to life, the process sometimes begins as early as yarn development itself, working with factories in Japan to create original yarns.
\nIn the studio, he also keeps domestic knitting machines that are no longer in production.<\/p>\n

Even among knitwear brands, there are very few designers who can actually knit themselves.
\nAt Kota Gushiken, the designer uses these machines and hand knitting to create the materials with his own hands, then refines them through repeated dialogue and sampling with the factories and artisanal knitters.<\/p>\n

He says, \u201cBy actually knitting the materials myself, the image in my mind becomes much more concrete, and I can communicate with the knitwear factories and artisanal knitters with far greater precision.\u201d
\nThere are, of course, types of knitwear that cannot be produced on the machines in his studio or by hand alone. In those cases, the pieces are realized through close collaboration with factories that combine exceptional technical skill with a deep passion for making things.<\/p>\n

These knitwear collections are born from the combination of highly distinctive yarns and close collaboration with exceptionally creative factories and artisanal knitters that have a deep understanding of the brand.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yarn<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As mentioned earlier, the designer says that \u201cknitwear is a very free medium.\u201d
\nSometimes production begins with an encounter with high-quality yarns made by Japanese mills; at other times, original yarns are developed in collaboration with those factories.
\nKota Gushiken\u2019s knits, with their unique colours, tactile qualities, and soft, gentle handle, grow out of this careful process of selecting yarns.<\/p>\n

The designer himself prefers yarns made as much as possible from natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and alpaca.
\nHaving seen and worked with a wide range of yarns, and having continued to develop them together with spinners, he says that \u201ceach material and yarn structure has its own natural suitability.\u201d
\nThis sensitivity comes from the fact that he can actually knit himself and can clearly imagine how a yarn will look and behave once it has been knitted.
\nThe knits that emerge from such rigorously selected yarns have a character that is uniquely Kota Gushiken: they simultaneously achieve volume and lightness, playfulness and comfort.<\/p>\n

Knitwear factories<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Using these carefully chosen yarns, Kota Gushiken\u2019s knitwear is knitted into pieces with a highly original sense of design.
\nThe designer often builds his creation directly into the knitted materials itself, and behind each piece lies a great deal of technique \u2013 from complex combinations of knit structures to meticulous tension adjustments.<\/p>\n

Because the knitwear has such an unprecedented look and feel, the factories that actually produce it must share a deep understanding of the designer\u2019s ideas and a highly creative mindset.
\nTo create a single knit, the factory first produces a sample based on the designer\u2019s vision, and from there the designer may re-knit it himself.
\nIt is because both sides are committed to making something better that they repeat this process of knitting and refining together.<\/p>\n

There are also times when the designer\u2019s studio cannot handle certain yarn combinations or pattern constructions. Even then, the factories interpret and expand on his intentions, giving form to the pieces through their own creativity.
\nPrecisely because the knitwear is so complex, its production requires considerable time and effort\u2014but through collaboration with factories that possess both advanced technique and genuine passion for making things, knits are created that richly embody the world of Kota Gushiken.<\/p>\n

The World of Kota Gushiken<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Each piece in Kota Gushiken\u2019s knitwear collection is meticulously crafted from premium natural materials and supported by a high level of technical expertise.
\nThe designer\u2019s own experiences and the feelings he encounters in his everyday life are reflected in these garments.<\/p>\n

This spirit can be seen not only in the making of the clothes themselves, but also in the brand\u2019s first show, held in March 2024.
\nFor this show, a well-known Japanese comedian, an actor, and a two-piece band \u2014 all close friends of the designer \u2014 presented the collection through a combination of comedy sketches and live performance.
\nStaged in a format completely different from conventional fashion shows, it became a widely talked-about event across Japan and a key moment in revealing both the brand\u2019s world and the designer\u2019s personality.<\/p>\n

Beyond the look and comfort of the knitwear itself, a defining characteristic of Kota Gushiken is its ability to have a positive emotional impact \u2014 to bring enjoyment and joy to those who see and wear the pieces, much like the show held in 2024.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, the brand aims to continue delivering collections that are distinctly Kota Gushiken: deeply personal yet uncompromising in creative intensity, produced in close partnership with Japanese knitwear factories and artisanal knitters, and within a scale where the designer can remain hands-on.<\/p>\n
