And once I learned more, through our company representative Nobu, about the background and reality of MotivMfg\u2019s craftsmanship, I strongly felt this was a brand I wanted Japanese retail buyers\u2014and ultimately everyday customers\u2014to know about.<\/p>\n

MotivMfg will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with the 2026 Fall\/Winter season.<\/p>\n

However, for those of us living in Japan, it isn\u2019t widely recognized as a brand with that much history.<\/p>\n

In the Japanese market up to now, MotivMfg has struggled to gain wider recognition, held back by a uniquely Japanese negative bias toward \u201ccountry of production.\u201d<\/p>\n

But I can\u2019t help questioning whether it\u2019s truly fair, in today\u2019s world, to judge things based on that kind of preconceived notion\u2014especially when this is a brand that is genuinely bringing powerful creative work into tangible form.<\/p>\n

Seeing the collection at the Paris showroom, this season in particular made me feel both the brand\u2019s manufacturing strength and its potential in Japan.<\/p>\n

These aren\u2019t items that sell themselves simply by being placed on the shop floor. They\u2019re pieces that truly resonate with buyers who can communicate the essence of what they are\u2014through their own style and perspective.<\/p>\n

Every garment is pattern-designed by Daniel, while Samuel has developed the heritage market within China and pours his own retail experience directly into MotivMfg.<\/p>\n

The second is the fact that factories in China\u2014with long histories and exceptional expertise\u2014powerfully support MotivMfg and work with them in deep collaboration.<\/p>\n

Because of this, you can sense a level of material development, fabric usage, and meticulous sewing that you don\u2019t typically encounter.<\/p>\n

And the pricing is not forced or unreasonable.<\/p>\n

Beyond the quality of the garments themselves, I also have experience as a buyer. So I felt that when worn, these pieces have an exceptional compatibility with a wide range of Japanese fashion brands\u2014harmonizing naturally as fashion, while also bringing elements that elevate and strengthen the overall styling.<\/p>\n

For all of these reasons, I see significant potential for MotivMfg in the Japanese market.<\/p>\n

First, the denim.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d say it\u2019s one of the brand\u2019s defining signatures\u2014its \u201cface,\u201d in a sense.<\/p>\n

While multiple variations appear each season, here I\u2019d like to introduce the 100% cotton model.<\/p>\n

A selvedge denim named \u201cDonegal Denim.\u201d<\/p>\n

Against dark-toned warp yarns, the weft is made from softly raised, fuzzy cotton. Even though it\u2019s 100% cotton, the inside\u2014the part that touches the skin\u2014feels exceptionally soft, thanks to that distinctive brushed texture.<\/p>\n

And because those fibers also appear on the surface as nep, it creates a really great mood.<\/p>\n

Some Japanese brands use wool or cashmere for the weft, but achieving this look and handfeel with a 100% cotton composition is something that, from a buyer\u2019s perspective, I believe many people will truly appreciate.<\/p>\n

I think this pairs especially well with leather shoes that incorporate dress elements\u2014styles commonly found in the Japanese market.<\/p>\n

As for the construction itself, most of the stitching is done with lockstitch, executed at an incredibly fine stitch length that you almost never see in Japan.<\/p>\n

Even areas where, in Japan, a lap-seam machine specialized for denim or heavy fabrics would typically be used are instead finished with fine-pitch lockstitching and narrow double stitching.<\/p>\n

Specifications like this elevate the overall presence of the denim dramatically.<\/p>\n

The pocket bags aren\u2019t finished with overlock; instead, they\u2019re enclosed by being caught into the front and back body seams.<\/p>\n

Depending on a store\u2019s style, of course, but for those who appreciate this kind of detail, I think this denim is packed with specifications they\u2019ll absolutely love.<\/p>\n

This is also a 100% cotton denim.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the narrow herringbone denim that continues to appear season after season as a staple for the brand.<\/p>\n

The fabric has a strong body and real power to it, but the stitch length is, once again, extremely fine\u2014so even within that robustness, you can see a delicate level of technique.<\/p>\n

When it comes to MotivMfg\u2019s denim series, I\u2019d go so far as to say that in Japan right now, there are almost no true competitors\u2014it carries a classic presence, yet still offers a remarkably high level of originality.<\/p>\n

Next, this fabric.<\/p>\n

At MotivMfg\u2019s Paris showroom this season, it was the very first fabric my hand reached for.<\/p>\n

A corduroy made of 90% silk and 10% cotton.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What appears on the surface is entirely silk corduroy.<\/p>\n

Corduroy\u2019s ridges are formed by the weft yarns, and the fabric is woven at a higher density to help prevent the pile from shedding\u2014but here, that high-density silk creates an extraordinary hand and texture.<\/p>\n

And because it\u2019s silk, it dyes into a deep black that cotton corduroy simply can\u2019t be compared to. The drape of the silk is also incredible.<\/p>\n

MotivMfg features many silk-based series throughout its collections, and this is something made possible precisely because it is \u201cChina.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Hangzhou area in China is said to have over 5,000 years of history in silk textiles.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s silk production carries an unimaginably deep heritage, and from that accumulated know-how comes a wide range of remarkable silk fabrics.<\/p>\n

This silk corduroy, in particular, is said to be a revival of an all-silk pile corduroy that disappeared after its last production run in the 1970s.<\/p>\n

The texture is truly outstanding.<\/p>\n

In this way, the use of materials and sewing techniques\u2014things you hardly ever see in Japan\u2014are major defining characteristics when looking at MotivMfg.<\/p>\n

The garments born from China\u2019s proud manufacturing background are all genuinely exciting to see.<\/p>\n

In particular, their use of silk is something uniquely enabled by China, and I feel it stands in a class of its own.<\/p>\n

And there was also a 100% silk fabric like this.<\/p>\n

A twill woven from melange-colored silk.<\/p>\n

Because it\u2019s melange\u2014using multiple tones\u2014the strong luster is more subdued than the corduroy, resulting in a twill fabric with a softer sheen.<\/p>\n

Even so, I could clearly feel that distinctive texture you simply don\u2019t get from other fibers.<\/p>\n

This is a newly developed shirt style created by the brand.<\/p>\n

A natural luster, along with the silk\u2019s crispness and beautiful drape.<\/p>\n

Even while worn, you can clearly see the fine stitch length and the edge-stitching set right up against the fabric edge.<\/p>\n

In addition, there was an Oxford cloth made at the same silk-specialist mill in Hangzhou\u201450% cotton and 50% silk.<\/p>\n

As well as a soft twill fabric woven from a combination of slubby linen and noil silk.<\/p>\n

The collection features a wide range of high-quality fabrics that make use of China\u2019s exceptional silk heritage.<\/p>\n

Beyond woven fabrics, there are also pieces like sweatshirts made with cotton and yak, as well as jerseys using blends such as cotton and linen, or cotton and silk.<\/p>\n
