Signature Trousers<\/strong>.<\/p>\nAt present, Signature Trousers consists of nine styles, numbered 001 through 009, and I feel that within these nine pieces, the essence of DIOGUARDI is condensed with remarkable clarity.<\/p>\n
The reason for that cannot be separated from the designer\u2019s background.
\nHe trained as a tailor on Savile Row, and later spent around ten years working professionally as a tailor for high-end European brands.<\/p>\n
What was refined through that experience was not simply the technical skill of tailoring, but a deeper sensibility for how clothing is constructed, and how it comes to exist meaningfully on a person.<\/p>\n
In DIOGUARDI, the designer\u2019s cultivated technique, sensitivity, and attitude toward clothing all appear with extraordinary density.<\/p>\n
That is precisely why I feel it is a brand that cannot easily be replaced by anything else.<\/p>\n
At the same time, I also believe that in order to grasp its appeal accurately, it is not enough to leave it at the single word \u201ctailor.\u201d<\/p>\n
To think more deeply about what the word \u201ctailor\u201d means is essential to understanding the excellence of DIOGUARDI with precision.<\/p>\n
So then, what do I mean here by \u201ctailor\u201d?
\nI would like to take a careful look at the idea itself.<\/p>\n
In the most basic sense, the English word tailor<\/em> refers to a person who makes garments to order.<\/p>\nNot ready-made clothing, but someone who designs, cuts, sews, and adjusts garments in accordance with the body and life of the person who will wear them.<\/p>\n
I believe this is the image that first comes to mind for most people when they hear the word \u201ctailor.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, if we try to define a tailor more precisely, it is not merely a profession.<\/p>\n
It is not simply about making clothes conform to the body, but also a form of intelligence concerned with how clothing is made to exist in relation to both the body and society.<\/p>\n
If we break that down further, I believe there are at least three aspects to it.<\/p>\n
The essence of the tailor lies in \u201cfitting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nAt its core, the word is about creating fit.<\/p>\n
But here, \u201cfit\u201d does not mean merely adjusting size.<\/p>\n
\n- fitting the body<\/li>\n
- fitting posture<\/li>\n
- fitting profession or situation<\/li>\n
- fitting the norms of an era<\/li>\n
- fitting the wearer\u2019s own self-image<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
In other words, a tailor is not only someone who applies cloth to the body, but also someone who connects a person to the forms of society through clothing.<\/p>\n
That is why suits and jackets are such emblematic expressions of the tailor\u2019s work.<\/p>\n
They are not merely garments that cover the body, but garments that help form a public persona.<\/p>\n
A tailor, in that sense, is someone who shapes the outline of that persona.<\/p>\n
A tailor creates structure.<\/strong><\/p>\nCompared to casual everyday clothing or garments led primarily by decoration, tailored clothing is above all distinguished by its structure.<\/p>\n
\n- the design of the shoulders and chest<\/li>\n
- the roll of the lapel<\/li>\n
- the balance of the front body, including the suppression at the waist<\/li>\n
- the way the sleeves are set<\/li>\n
- the way canvas and internal materials are placed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Through such elements, flat cloth is transformed into something three-dimensional.<\/p>\n
In this sense, one could say that the tailor \u201carchitecturizes\u201d cloth.<\/p>\n
That is why a tailored jacket is not simply stitched fabric, but an apparatus that idealizes the body through its internal structure.<\/p>\n
A tailor is also a corrector of the body.<\/strong><\/p>\nA tailor does not merely trace the body as it is.<\/p>\n
More often, tailoring is also a practice of correcting the body in order to make it appear more beautiful.<\/p>\n
\n- making the body appear more composed<\/li>\n
- making posture appear more upright<\/li>\n
- making the torso appear cleaner and more refined<\/li>\n
- raising the visual center of gravity of the whole figure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
In other words, tailoring is not simply the reproduction of the natural body, but also the staging of a socially desirable image of the body.<\/p>\n
A tailor stays close to the individual, while at the same time guiding that person toward a certain discipline.<\/p>\n
It is clothing for freedom, and at the same time clothing for form.<\/p>\n
I believe this duality expresses the concept of the tailor with real accuracy.<\/p>\n
Taking these three aspects together, the commonly repeated images of tailoring\u2014\u201cwell-made,\u201d \u201celegant,\u201d \u201cclassic\u201d\u2014are not enough to fully grasp its essence.<\/p>\n
The essence of the tailor does not lie in the act of measuring the body itself.<\/p>\n
It lies in reading the body, giving structure to cloth, and designing a balance appropriate to that person\u2019s bearing and position.<\/p>\n
That is how I see it.<\/p>\n
When viewed through this understanding of the tailor, the meaning embedded in each design of DIOGUARDI\u2019s trousers comes into much sharper focus.<\/p>\n
And what makes DIOGUARDI so distinctive is that this tailorly way of thinking, grounded in such a solid foundation, is pursued not through jackets, but through trousers.<\/p>\n
And further still, that foundation is infused with the depth of the designer\u2019s own creative sensibility.<\/p>\n
If DIOGUARDI is understood only through words such as \u201cwell-tailored\u201d or \u201cclassic,\u201d it becomes difficult to reach the true essence of the collection.<\/p>\n
A person who has devoted extraordinary thought to trousers, and who has accumulated as much as seventeen years of experience as a tailor, from training through professional practice, producing a collection in this form\u2014such a presence is rare even on a global scale.<\/p>\n
At the very beginning, the designer of DIOGUARDI said this to me:<\/p>\n
\u201cI want every visible detail that constitutes a pair of trousers to carry value.\u201d<\/p>\n
From here, I would like to introduce the Signature Trousers collection through its sample pieces.<\/p>\n
Each of the nine styles is highly complex in construction, and it would be impossible to write about all of them fully in a single edition of shop talk<\/em>.<\/p>\nFor that reason, while I will show all of the models, I will focus in particular on selected pieces when discussing the details.<\/p>\n

A high-waisted silhouette drawn from the 1920s, the deeper rise of the 1990s, and the tapered silhouette of the 2010s\u2014<\/p>\n
by bringing together these elements from three different eras, it arrives at what feels to be the brand\u2019s ideal form.<\/p>\n

Because of this, the fabric falls with remarkable fluidity, appearing beautiful even in stillness, while in motion it produces striking shadows that shift with the movement of the body.<\/p>\n
This is clearly different from the kind of drape one typically sees in ordinary wool slacks.<\/p>\n
Through its distinctive form, it creates a sense of contrast in motion\u2014something akin to tension and release.<\/p>\n

Signature 002 is a model that shares a sculptural language with the previously mentioned ICONIC 001<\/strong>.<\/p>\nThe major difference lies in its structure.<\/p>\n
Canvas is inserted into areas such as the center line and the pleats, making those structural lines appear with clear definition.<\/p>\n
In addition, the outer fabric is intentionally cut to create an effect in which threads seem to burst outward. But this is not a random fraying\u2014rather, it is deliberately produced by distressing the fabric with a metal brush.<\/p>\n

The designer told me that he wants the viewer to feel, in this detail, a beauty that resides in incompletion.<\/p>\n
And more fundamentally, Signature Trousers is a made-to-order collection.<\/p>\n
The brand\u2019s other collection, Re.Touched<\/strong>, consists of trousers that the designer reconstructs himself in his own atelier, using oversized vintage trousers as the starting point.<\/p>\nBy contrast, Signature Trousers<\/strong> involves structures that cannot be produced using the equipment available in his atelier.<\/p>\nFor this collection, the designer himself goes to a tailoring house in London, where he works alongside tailors using specialist tailoring equipment.<\/p>\n
In the production process of Signature Trousers, each step is carried out with great care, including processes that would often be omitted in contemporary production.<\/p>\n
One area that feels particularly emblematic of this approach is the inseam along the inner leg.<\/p>\n

When shaping the silhouette of a pair of trousers, there are many important elements\u2014but among them, one area that cannot be overlooked is the inner leg.<\/p>\n
The beauty of its outline has a major influence on the overall impression of the trousers.<\/p>\n
At DIOGUARDI, the pattern used for the inner leg is cut with its own distinctive angle and curve.<\/p>\n
But it does not stop there.<\/p>\n
At the stage when the fabric pieces have already been cut, heat and steam are applied only to the inner-leg side.<\/p>\n
By doing so, the fabric on the inner leg is made to shrink, creating a three-dimensional and beautiful inner-leg curve that could not be achieved through pattern-making alone.<\/p>\n
A pattern derived from the designer\u2019s experience, together with a rigorous production process at the tailoring house that includes intensive ironwork\u2014<\/p>\n
it is through both of these that Signature Trousers takes shape.<\/p>\n
There is also another notable feature at the crotch area.<\/p>\n
Across every model in the Signature Trousers collection, a distinctive drape emerges at this point.<\/p>\n

This drape is intentional: it refines the line of the wearer\u2019s legs and is designed to make the overall silhouette appear cleaner and more balanced.<\/p>\n
The contour of the inner leg, and the drape that rises from the crotch\u2014<\/p>\n
I believe these two elements are forms that have a profound effect on the value of a pair of trousers.<\/p>\n

The right side of the body is folded inward at the waist as though pinned into place, and at that point a pin is attached, which can also function as a belt loop.<\/p>\n
This creates a form that in some ways recalls hakama<\/strong>, and because the trousers are made in an unlined, single-layer construction, the lightness and movement of the fabric become even more pronounced.<\/p>\nThe way the fabric on the right side sways broadly with movement is particularly striking.<\/p>\n
I myself have a smaller frame, so when I wear trousers with a deliberately oversized waist like this, the fabric around the hips will usually bunch and hang awkwardly.<\/p>\n
But with DIOGUARDI, none of that happens.<\/p>\n
And yet, it is not simply because the hip measurements have been made smaller.<\/p>\n
When I actually put them on and look in the mirror, I am strongly reminded that this is not an accidental fit, but a form intentionally constructed through the eye of a tailor.<\/p>\n

It is a pair of trousers constructed with a thick faux fur on the exterior and a full silk lining on the inside.<\/p>\n
Even when seen in person, these details are almost entirely hidden by the length of the pile, but it is equipped with side pockets in the usual way, and belt loops are also attached in the same material.<\/p>\n
And it is remarkably warm.<\/p>\n

Moreover, because the lining is entirely silk, it feels cool only for the brief moment when you first put your legs through, then quickly turns warm thanks to silk\u2019s high thermal conductivity.<\/p>\n
What is equally important is that the trouser pattern is fully resolved in a way that supports and elevates the strong volume of the outer fabric, so this is by no means a garment driven by visual impact alone.<\/p>\n

An inward pleat is placed at the side, and the position and depth of that pleat make the waist and leg line appear exceptionally refined when worn.<\/p>\n
And although the waist is staggered at the front, it is constructed to meet at the back. When worn, there is no sense of awkwardness at all\u2014if anything, it feels gently enveloping.<\/p>\n

Within Signature Trousers, there are models in which a tailor\u2019s way of thinking is felt more strongly, and others in which the creative expression appears more vividly.<\/p>\n
There are not many brands that can convey such a rich range of ideas and expression through just nine pairs of trousers.<\/p>\n
In this edition of shop talk<\/em>, I have not included photographs of the trousers being worn, but once actually put on, each of them offers a clearly palpable sense of being enveloped by the garment.<\/p>\nThis kind of clothing-making is, I believe, precisely what DIOGUARDI is able to achieve as a brand devoted exclusively to trousers.<\/p>\n
Each introduction here can only ever be fragmentary, but even so, I would be very happy if this has allowed you to sense even a part of the singularity and depth of DIOGUARDI as a brand.<\/p>\n
