This time, I would like to take a closer look at COTTLE\u2019s \u201cGOLDEN WHEAT FIELD CORDUROY\u201d<\/strong> collection.<\/p>\n

The fabric used in this collection is an original corduroy developed by COTTLE together with the Japanese weaving mill Kaneta Orimono.<\/p>\n

Corduroy is a fabric everyone knows.<\/p>\n

Long familiar as a staple for autumn and winter, it has been widely recognized for its ridged texture and its somewhat rustic, warm character.<\/p>\n

Precisely because of that, many people likely carry a more or less shared image of what corduroy is.<\/p>\n

A fabric with a bit of weight, a strong sense of seasonality, and a somewhat casual feel.<\/p>\n

For most people, that is probably what corduroy represents.<\/p>\n

And yet, the corduroy made by COTTLE does not fit within that established image.<\/p>\n

It looks like corduroy, but the moment you touch it, that impression is quietly overturned.<\/p>\n

It is light, soft, and smooth\u2014qualities entirely unlike the weight, stiffness, and strong seasonality typically associated with conventional corduroy.<\/p>\n

To describe it simply as having a beautiful texture would not be enough.<\/p>\n

Its singular character is not the result of finishing techniques or superficial embellishment.<\/p>\n

Rather, it is a completely original fabric, conceived as a specification unlike anything else in the world: made from 100% cotton, yet using two different kinds of cotton, and developed through a design process that reaches all the way into the structure of the weave itself.<\/p>\n

In other words, COTTLE\u2019s corduroy is not an attempt to make an existing material look slightly new. It is an effort to preserve the familiar appearance of an authentic, widely recognized fabric while reconstructing its inner nature into something entirely different.<\/p>\n

In fact, many people who have touched this fabric have said that it changed their impression of corduroy altogether.<\/p>\n

There are even those who had never been drawn to corduroy before, yet find themselves reaching for this collection.<\/p>\n

That seems to suggest that this is not merely a matter of personal preference, but rather evidence that this fabric stands at a point fundamentally different from conventional corduroy.<\/p>\n

And within it is a philosophy of making that could only have been reached through the collaboration between COTTLE and Kaneta Orimono.<\/p>\n

How was it possible to create such an unfamiliar texture within a material that feels so familiar?<\/p>\n

To understand that background, we must first look at the fundamental structure of corduroy itself.<\/p>\n

Though it is a fabric everyone knows, corduroy in fact has an unusually distinctive construction.<\/p>\n

What symbolizes that distinctiveness most clearly are the ribs<\/strong> that appear across its surface.<\/p>\n

Where many fabrics have a relatively flat surface, corduroy has a clearly pronounced relief.<\/p>\n

Those three-dimensional ribs are not merely a visual characteristic.<\/p>\n

They are also a defining sign that corduroy is made through a way of thinking and a production process fundamentally different from those of other woven fabrics.<\/p>\n

So before going further, I would first like to organize the structure of corduroy itself, and from there unravel why COTTLE\u2019s \u201cGOLDEN WHEAT FIELD CORDUROY\u201d<\/strong> possesses such an extraordinary texture.<\/p>\n

The origins of corduroy lie in Europe.<\/p>\n

Today, much of what circulates on the market consists of inexpensive corduroy made in China, while in Japan, Enshu is known as one of its representative production regions.<\/p>\n

And the story of how corduroy took root in Japan is deeply suggestive.<\/p>\n

It is said that when corduroy was first introduced to Japan, what arrived was neither a manufacturing method nor craftsmen to pass on the technique.<\/p>\n

What came instead was a single piece of fabric from Germany.<\/p>\n

In other words, Japanese corduroy production did not begin as a transfer of completed technology. It began as an intensely exploratory process of trial and error\u2014using a single piece of fabric in front of them as a clue, and asking how it might be reproduced.<\/p>\n

There was no recipe, no fixed machine settings, no definitive process to follow.<\/p>\n

Under such circumstances, Japanese craftsmen studied the fabric, inferred its structure, and through repeated ingenuity, gradually developed it into a technique of their own.<\/p>\n

What emerged at the end of that process was a form of corduroy that evolved independently in Japan, distinct from corduroy produced overseas.<\/p>\n

In weaving mills in Enshu, this Japanese-made corduroy is referred to as \u201ckoruten.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This difference in naming is not merely a matter of wording.<\/p>\n

Even though it is still corduroy, it has a uniquely Japanese lineage, with processes and specifications that differ from those of corduroy made abroad.<\/p>\n

And most importantly, what supports its texture is the sheer number of steps involved\u2014clearly unlike those of other woven fabrics.<\/p>\n

Corduroy is not complete at the moment it is woven.<\/p>\n

Its characteristic ribs do not appear on the surface in their finished form from the beginning. They only emerge after a succession of additional processes.<\/p>\n

That is precisely why it is said to require more than twice the labor of an ordinary fabric.<\/p>\n

From here, I would like to follow, step by step, the key processes behind Japanese corduroy.<\/p>\n

Behind a fabric that may seem so familiar at first glance lies a manufacturing background of remarkable singularity.<\/p>\n

Its distinctiveness should gradually begin to come into view.<\/p>\n

To begin with, I would like to touch on the most distinctive feature of corduroy: its ribs.<\/p>\n

That three-dimensional fullness is not complete the moment the fabric comes off the loom.<\/p>\n

In fabric woven for corduroy, rows of pile yarn float on the surface, forming the parts that will later become the ribs.<\/p>\n

Only by cutting open those raised yarns, one by one, does corduroy\u2019s characteristic brushed surface finally begin to appear.<\/p>\n

Here, a specialized paired tool\u2014a guide needle and a cutter\u2014is used to cut only the pile yarns that float on the surface of the fabric.<\/p>\n

The guide needle is inserted by hand into each individual pile section, and the cutter is then run along its groove, severing only the necessary yarns without damaging the surrounding structure.<\/p>\n

It may sound simple when described in words, but in practice it is an extraordinarily delicate operation, requiring the craftsperson to read the fine pile structure of the fabric and repeatedly apply the most suitable guide needle and cutter with painstaking care.<\/p>\n

The ribs of corduroy are not created by weaving alone.<\/p>\n

They must first be cut open. Only through that process does the fabric begin to acquire its distinctive expression.<\/p>\n

What is especially noteworthy is that, as of today, this entire sequence of processes is carried out domestically by only one company: Iwata Sangyo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The quality of Japanese corduroy is sustained by such rare and limited sites of production.<\/p>\n

The first step is desizing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This is the process of removing the sizing that was applied to the yarn before weaving, but in the case of corduroy, it is far more than a mere preliminary treatment.<\/p>\n

The greige fabric, after cutting, is immersed in hot water at around 80 to 90 degrees Celsius, formed into a rope-like shape, and passed through a machine called a wince<\/strong>, where it is kneaded repeatedly in water.<\/p>\n

This method is said to be unique to Japan.<\/p>\n

The fabric is moved through a large volume of water as if it were being made to swim, and the sizing is removed slowly over time.<\/p>\n

The fact that Enshu is blessed with abundant water resources is of decisive importance in a process like this.<\/p>\n

To use water generously, to avoid forcing the fabric, and to knead it slowly and thoroughly\u2014this gradual accumulation is what gives corduroy its distinctive fullness and softness.<\/p>\n

It is easy to understand why Mr. Ota of Kaneta Orimono describes this step as the \u201ccore\u201d<\/strong> of Japanese corduroy.<\/p>\n

To that extent, desizing is a process that shapes the very foundation of the fabric\u2019s texture.<\/p>\n

Airing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The fabric, saturated with water during desizing and kneaded into a rope-like form, becomes twisted in the process.<\/p>\n

Airing<\/strong> is the step used to return that twist to its original state without forcing it.<\/p>\n

In this process, the fabric is slowly lifted to a great height and allowed to settle in a manner that is as close to natural as possible, using gravity and the force of air.<\/p>\n

That height reaches as much as 30 meters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rather than applying abrupt tension, the aim is to draw out the fabric\u2019s own capacity to recover, allowing it to gradually return to its proper condition.<\/p>\n

There is something about the sight of it that recalls sun-drying in the open air.<\/p>\n

Equipment capable of reaching such a height is extremely unusual, and is said to be found at almost no other dyeing mills.<\/p>\n

And yet, it is precisely this kind of large-scale equipment, and this unwillingness to spare time in the process, that supports the quality of Japanese corduroy.<\/p>\n

Kneaded during desizing, then restored through airing\u2014<\/p>\n

through this sequence, the fabric is not merely brought back into shape, but deepens in texture itself.<\/p>\n

Drying<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once the twisted fabric has been restored, it moves on to the drying stage.<\/p>\n

But here too, corduroy cannot be handled in the same way as ordinary fabrics.<\/p>\n

Corduroy has thickness, and in addition it possesses the three-dimensional structure of ribs.<\/p>\n

For that reason, it is difficult to achieve an even finish by simply placing it in a large dryer and drying it all at once.<\/p>\n

If the ribs rise unevenly, the very expression of the corduroy begins to collapse.<\/p>\n

For this reason, at Iwata Sangyo, moisture is removed while the fabric is kept straight and even, using as many as 32 rollers<\/strong> heated to over 100 degrees Celsius<\/strong>, along with countless cylinders.<\/p>\n

It may be more accurate to describe this not simply as drying, but as a process of finishing the fabric while preserving and refining the expression of its surface.<\/p>\n

For corduroy, the uniformity of the ribs is not merely a visual matter.<\/p>\n

It is directly tied to the dignity and overall level of completion the fabric possesses.<\/p>\n

That is precisely why even a stage as seemingly unassuming as drying requires its own dedicated method and equipment.<\/p>\n

Singeing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Within this sequence, once the corduroy has passed through desizing, airing, and drying, it finally begins to approach the form most people imagine when they think of corduroy.<\/p>\n

The ribs rise, and that distinctive surface expression starts to appear.<\/p>\n

And yet, it is still not complete.<\/p>\n

At this stage, the pile often still retains unwanted fuzz.<\/p>\n

The process used to remove it and refine the surface is called singeing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With ordinary fabrics, the surface is often singed with a burner.
\nBut with corduroy, a distinctive method is used: the fabric is passed at high speed over a large heated iron bar.<\/p>\n

This allows only the unwanted fuzz to be burned away precisely, while preserving the expression of the ribs.<\/p>\n

At the actual production site, the burning of that excess fuzz creates the sight of flames running across the surface of the fabric.<\/p>\n

It is a scene that seems to make the peculiar nature of corduroy visible in plain form.<\/p>\n

However, because singeing leaves a scorched tint on the fabric, it is generally a process applied to corduroy that is intended to be dyed.<\/p>\n

And here, COTTLE\u2019s fabric introduces yet another unique condition.<\/p>\n

COTTLE offers an undyed color called WHEAT ECRU<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With a specification that preserves the natural tone of the fiber itself, a finish premised on conventional singeing cannot be used.<\/p>\n

In other words, COTTLE\u2019s corduroy cannot be completed simply by following the standard production route of ordinary corduroy.<\/p>\n

To reconcile both its color and its texture, a different set of decisions and refinements becomes necessary.<\/p>\n

Air Tumbler<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The final stage is the finishing process carried out with an air tumbler<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As the name suggests, this is a process in which the fabric is struck and loosened by the force of strong air, relaxing its stiffness while drawing out softness and fullness.<\/p>\n

The wind speed is said to exceed 500 meters<\/strong>, and through that force of air, the fabric begins to take on a distinctive softness, as though it were swelling from within.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the ribs are brought out even more clearly, and the expression of the corduroy is given its final form.<\/p>\n

There are many different finishing methods, but this air tumbler is known as a technique unique to Enshu.<\/p>\n

It works especially well with fabrics woven on shuttle looms, giving them a plump texture that seems to hold air within itself.<\/p>\n

It does not simply make the surface appear soft; it is a finish that transforms the character of the fabric as a whole.<\/p>\n

Seen in this way, corduroy is not merely a fabric with ribs.<\/p>\n

It is a fabric whose expression is gradually drawn out through a succession of processes\u2014cutting, kneading, soaking with water, restoring, refining, singeing, and finally finishing with air.<\/p>\n

And yet, the distinctiveness of COTTLE\u2019s corduroy does not lie only in being an extension of Japanese corduroy.<\/p>\n

It lies in the fact that, on that very foundation, the fabric structure itself has been reconfigured.<\/p>\n

Mr. Ota of Kaneta Orimono says that corduroy is a fabric with an extremely deep accumulation of established specifications, and that even within Japan, the development of an entirely new weave structure is exceptionally rare.<\/p>\n

The reason is clear.<\/p>\n

Corduroy requires a series of complex processes, including the cutting and raising described earlier, and bringing a new specification into production demands a level of output and continuity sufficient to justify it.<\/p>\n

If it is produced only as a one-off project once every six months, the cost is simply difficult to balance.<\/p>\n

In that sense, the very nature of COTTLE as a brand provides a crucial condition.<\/p>\n

Rather than presenting fabrics as fleeting, twice-yearly collections, COTTLE develops collections as ongoing series centered on the fabric itself.<\/p>\n

It is precisely because of that continuity that the brand is able to step into the development of an original corduroy specification\u2014something that would ordinarily be difficult to sustain.<\/p>\n

Kaneta Orimono, too, is a mill that refuses to settle for a situation in which existing standard fabrics continue to dominate circulation, and instead chooses to take on difficult developments.<\/p>\n

It is where these two approaches meet that \u201cGOLDEN WHEAT FIELD CORDUROY\u201d<\/strong> begins.<\/p>\n

What COTTLE set out to create was
\na corduroy with authentic ribs\u2014light, soft, yet endowed with luxurious luster and durability.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But that was far from easy to achieve.<\/p>\n

In general, if one seeks lightness and softness in corduroy, durability and luster tend to be diminished.<\/p>\n

Conversely, if one aims to enhance durability and bring out a lustrous appearance, the fabric must become denser, and with that come weight and stiffness.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the ribs of corduroy do not hold simply because the pile is raised.<\/p>\n

Those delicate ribs are maintained because the cut pile yarns support one another through friction.<\/p>\n

To realize a fabric that preserves both the beauty of the ribs and its durability while also pursuing lightness and softness required a fundamental rethinking at the level of weave design itself.<\/p>\n

Even so, this was not a design that could simply be conceived and then made to work.<\/p>\n

In the earliest trials, the new structure failed to produce the beautifully rounded ribs they were aiming for, and the desired expression could not be achieved.<\/p>\n

Then, in order to express both the delicacy of the pile and a sense of luxury, they chose to use soft, fine Ultimate Pima<\/strong> yarn. But when the density of the weft was increased to secure sufficient pile volume, a severe degree of weaving shrinkage<\/strong> began to occur.<\/p>\n

Particularly on a shuttle loom, the structure tends to place stress on the selvedges during weaving.<\/p>\n

As a result, when shrinkage caused the width of the fabric to change more than expected, excessive force was placed on both selvedges, making yarn breakage much more likely.<\/p>\n

In other words, the closer they came to the texture they were aiming for, the more difficult the very act of weaving itself became.<\/p>\n

And yet, after repeated rounds of prototyping, they eventually arrived at a completely original weave structure: one in which only the weft structure was made high-density, while the ground structure was intentionally designed at a lower density.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That concept was pursued just as rigorously in the selection of materials.<\/p>\n

Although the fabric is made of 100% cotton, it is composed through the deliberate use of two different kinds of cotton.<\/p>\n
