What lies behind them is not merely an admiration for vintage garments as objects, but a regard for an era when workwear was still shaped by the skill and judgement of individual craftspeople.<\/p>\n

In this edition of shop talk<\/em>, we introduce MotivMfg\u2014hereafter referred to as Motiv\u2014which will hold a trade exhibition for buyers in Tokyo this July.<\/p>\n

The History of Garment-Making Behind the History of Brands<\/strong><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

The history of jeans is often told as the history of brands, beginning with Levi\u2019s.<\/p>\n

In 1873, Levi Strauss & Co., together with Jacob Davis, secured a patent for reinforcing stress points\u2014such as pockets\u2014with rivets.<\/p>\n

From that point onward, Levi\u2019s played a major role in bringing jeans to widespread public attention.<\/p>\n

Later, with the emergence of brands such as Lee and, in the years that followed, Wrangler, jeans came to be distributed throughout the United States and established themselves as an industry in their own right.<\/p>\n

Yet when the history of jeans and workwear is viewed solely through the evolution of brands and products, something important disappears from view.<\/p>\n

That is the history of garment-making itself.<\/p>\n

Today, the making of clothes is often discussed within the framework of brands.<\/p>\n

In the United States of the past, however, long before brand names were recognised nationwide as they are today, locally rooted clothing merchants, tailors, and small workshops were already making garments for the people who worked in their communities.<\/p>\n

Many of those clothes were made and worn locally before eventually disappearing into history.<\/p>\n

As a result, very few records remain today\u2014not even the names of those who made them.<\/p>\n

And yet, perhaps it was precisely within this form of garment-making, which left no name in history, that the most fundamental character of workwear could be found.<\/p>\n

It is this sense of that era that Motiv turns its attention to.<\/p>\n

Between Tailoring and Industrial Production<\/strong><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

Samuel describes Motiv\u2019s denim construction as being very close to that of denim workwear made between the 1890s and the 1930s.<\/p>\n

This was a transitional period in which American workwear was rapidly becoming standardised as an industrial product.<\/p>\n

At the same time, local tailors and small workshops continued to operate, and their individual skills, experience, and judgement were reflected in the construction and sewing of the garments they made.<\/p>\n

Factory standardisation and the work of individual tailors.<\/p>\n

It was a period in which these two approaches existed side by side.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What is important here is that Motiv\u2019s denim should not be understood simply as an extension of traditional American jeans.<\/p>\n

Samuel explains that Motiv\u2019s denim is closer not to conventional American jeans, but to an earlier form of European workwear in which tailoring techniques were still deeply embedded.<\/p>\n

I believe this is an important point in understanding Motiv.<\/p>\n

Although denim is the material, the garments do not simply follow the familiar structure of five-pocket jeans.<\/p>\n

Instead, they are constructed as complete pieces of clothing by bringing together tailoring techniques, the structural logic of workwear, and industrial sewing methods.<\/p>\n

That approach lies at the heart of the way Motiv has consistently made clothes.<\/p>\n

What Motiv looks towards is not simply vintage as an \u201cobject.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is not a matter of reproducing a surviving garment exactly as it is, but of examining the thinking about garment-making that existed before that garment came into being.<\/p>\n

How did local tailors and small workshops conceive of and construct clothing for the workers in front of them, within the limits of the techniques and conditions available at the time?<\/p>\n

It is that way of thinking itself that interests Motiv.<\/p>\n

Samuel explains that while the sewing techniques used in Motiv\u2019s denim collection are close to those found in old workwear of the period, the pattern cutting is far more complex than that of actual vintage garments.<\/p>\n

This complexity is not intended to reproduce the clothing of the past exactly.<\/p>\n

Rather, it is imagined from the principle:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat could have been achieved within the limited technology of the past?\u201d<\/p>\n

Or perhaps it could be described as a futuristic interpretation viewed from a very distant past.<\/p>\n

Motiv\u2019s denim garments possess this distinctive sense of time.<\/p>\n

Rather than tracing the outlines of old clothing, they use the techniques, limitations, and ideas of an earlier era as a starting point for creating contemporary garments.<\/p>\n

To see how this philosophy is expressed in the clothes themselves, we will now turn to the denim collection presented at the Paris showroom held in June 2026.<\/p>\n

Original Herringbone Denim<\/b><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

The denim collection displayed in the showroom.<\/p>\n

One of Motiv\u2019s signature fabrics is its Original Herringbone Denim.<\/p>\n

Developed in collaboration with highly skilled selvedge denim weavers in China, the fabric is woven on a specialised dobby loom dating from the 1950s.<\/p>\n

According to Samuel, the loom used to weave this selvedge denim is structurally very similar to Japanese Toyoda looms.<\/p>\n

Unlike conventional denim, its herringbone construction gives the surface a distinctive sense of texture and depth.<\/p>\n

The black warp yarns are sulphur-dyed, allowing the colour to gradually fade with wear, much like indigo denim, while developing greater depth and character over time.<\/p>\n

As the fabric is unsanforised, it may shrink by up to 13 per cent.<\/p>\n

The finished garments are given a one-wash treatment in advance, helping to reduce substantial shrinkage after purchase.<\/p>\n

The herringbone construction is also said to serve a functional purpose beyond its appearance, helping to balance the twisting of the fabric that can occur during washing.<\/p>\n

Looking at Motiv\u2019s denim, I feel that very few denim garments are sewn with this degree of precision and refinement.<\/p>\n

Most areas of Motiv\u2019s denim garments are constructed using single-needle lockstitching.<\/p>\n

In contemporary mass-produced denim and workwear, flat-felled seams and chainstitching are widely used for reasons of efficiency, strength, and consistency in production.<\/p>\n

Motiv, however, deliberately makes extensive use of single-needle lockstitching.<\/p>\n

Many denim workwear garments produced between the 1890s and the 1930s were finely sewn using this method.<\/p>\n

Single-needle sewing may be technically simple, but it also imposes considerable limitations.<\/p>\n

It demands more deliberate decisions about how seam allowances are handled, how layers of fabric are brought together, and where each line of stitching is placed.<\/p>\n

Unlike sewing methods developed primarily for efficient mass production, it requires a distinctly craftsmanlike understanding of how to bring an entire garment into being.<\/p>\n

I am drawn to this fine stitchwork not only for its visual beauty, but also for the way it lends a sense of definition to the garment as a whole.<\/p>\n

Many of Motiv\u2019s woven garments\u2014including its denim, tailoring, and military-inspired pieces\u2014are produced in the brand\u2019s own atelier on the outskirts of Beijing.<\/p>\n

The atelier is home to eight highly experienced machinists who once worked as the sample-sewing team at a state-owned factory.<\/p>\n

When that factory closed, Motiv brought the entire sampling team into the company, preserving the group intact.<\/p>\n

Sample sewing requires far more than simply following a set of specifications. It demands the ability to read the character of a fabric, understand the structure of a garment, and judge its overall level of completion.<\/p>\n

The experience and judgement of these craftspeople remain embedded in the construction of Motiv\u2019s clothes.<\/p>\n

What Motiv is doing is not simply reproducing garments with the same structure as vintage pieces.<\/p>\n

Rather, I believe the brand is attempting to reconstruct, in contemporary clothing, the limitations and decisions that shaped garment-making in the past, along with the possibilities that once existed in the hands of skilled craftspeople.<\/p>\n

Even today, when countless denim products already exist, Motiv\u2019s commitment to making clothes in this way within its own atelier gives the brand a clear sense of individuality.<\/p>\n

Because its garments depend on the experience and judgement of the people who make them, they are not easily replicated.<\/p>\n

Looking at Motiv\u2019s denim collection, denim can be understood not merely as a material or a collection of details, but as a way of considering the ideas and principles through which workwear has historically been made.<\/p>\n

The shirts are available in a wide variety of fabrics and styles, but two materials in particular left a strong impression on me this season.<\/p>\n

The first is the 2-Ply 180s Sateen Shirting.<\/p>\n

Woven from two-ply 180-count yarns, the sateen has a remarkably smooth feel against the skin, a finely textured surface, and a subtle lustre.<\/p>\n

Despite its broad stripes, it retains an understated elegance without appearing overly assertive.<\/p>\n

It feels like the kind of fabric one would instinctively reach for in the warmer months.<\/p>\n

From the waist and hips to the rise and the line of the leg, every detail has been considered with a degree of precision that cannot be reduced to the word \u201csilhouette\u201d alone.<\/p>\n

This attention extends beyond the silhouette itself to the way details such as pockets are constructed.<\/p>\n

At first glance, trouser pockets may seem like an entirely ordinary feature.<\/p>\n

In many cases, for reasons of production efficiency, they are built into the side seam or incorporated into existing panel lines.<\/p>\n

Motiv, however, cuts directly into the front body and constructs the pocket with narrow double welts.<\/p>\n

As production becomes increasingly streamlined, labour-intensive details such as these are often gradually eliminated.<\/p>\n

Motiv nevertheless continues to pursue what it considers the ideal form of trousers, guided by a tailor\u2019s point of view.<\/p>\n

Motiv is a brand that does not simply trace the clothing of the past, but imagines the future through the limitations of the past.<\/p>\n

Denim, shirts, trousers, tailored jackets, technical wear, and leatherwear.<\/p>\n

What unites them all is an approach that does not treat clothing merely as form, but seeks to examine the techniques, structures, and ideas that lie behind it.<\/p>\n

Looking at Motiv\u2019s collection naturally leads us to consider historical aspects of clothing that are often overlooked.<\/p>\n

It is here that I find the greatest significance in introducing this brand.<\/p>\n
