Today, I\u2019d like to focus on what is arguably designer Sugihara\u2019s greatest technical strength:<\/p>\n The structure and silhouette of garments shaped through draping.<\/p>\n To do this, I\u2019ll highlight one piece from the collection: the \u201cDraping Yoke Raglan Sleeve Shirt.\u201d<\/p>\n First, as a fundamental point: all of AEHRR\u2019s garment pattern design is carried out by Sugihara himself.<\/p>\n Using a mannequin that replicates the bone structure, curves, and contours of the female body in intricate detail\u2014both upper and lower body\u2014he works with:<\/p>\n He lays the muslin over the body form, pinning and cutting it to follow the curves of the human form.<\/p>\n He then rejoins the pieces with pins, gradually shaping the garment\u2019s prototype.<\/p>\n This method is known as \u201cdraping.\u201d<\/p>\n When working this way, Sugihara doesn\u2019t simply conform to the body\u2019s natural shape.<\/p>\n He deliberately places fabric away from the body to create air layers within the garment\u2014prioritizing not only a three-dimensional look, but also sculpting silhouettes that make a woman\u2019s body appear even more beautiful.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n A designer who continually engages with the act of shaping garments by observing, considering, and creating original forms through the technique of draping.<\/p>\n When I first saw this process myself, I didn\u2019t feel like I was witnessing the making of clothing\u2014but rather the creation of a sculptural, three-dimensional art object. It clearly differed from \u201cordinary clothes\u201d; it embodied a sense of sculptural beauty<\/em>.<\/p>\n This process isn\u2019t something any designer or pattern maker can easily master. It is a technique that Mr. Sugihara has acquired over more than ten years of dedicated practice.<\/p>\n To my knowledge, there are only a handful of pattern makers in Japan who actively promote and teach draping. Those who do are not only still active in the industry but also contribute to the education and training of future pattern makers.<\/p>\n That\u2019s how complex and, in some ways, specialized<\/em> this method has become in the modern era.<\/p>\n Moreover, Sugihara doesn\u2019t stop at simply executing standard draping techniques. As mentioned earlier, he intentionally introduces air layers<\/em> between the body and the fabric to create sculptural silhouettes that make the female body appear even more beautiful. He constantly challenges textbook methods\u2014repeating cycles of adaptation and innovation.<\/p>\n As a result, AEHRR garments exhibit forms and construction rarely seen in contemporary fashion, sometimes even requiring the development of new sewing methods to realize the envisioned structure.<\/p>\n Sugihara refers to himself not just as a designer, but as a form-maker<\/em>. At the same time, he has a clear vision for what he strives to achieve.<\/p>\n A key influence for this philosophy is the legacy of Crist\u00f3bal Balenciaga, often called \u201cthe architect of haute couture.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n According to historical records, Balenciaga was capable of handling every step of the garment-making process himself. That triangular shape in the sleeve… Even the exact position where this triangular shape is formed is, of course, intentional.<\/p>\n The sleeve form is based on a proportion that designer Sugihara refers to as the \u201cgolden ratio,\u201d a balance he has developed through years of work.<\/p>\n The sleeve seam marked with the yellow circle is essential to beautifully realize that \u201cgolden ratio.\u201d<\/p>\n Now, seams like this can occasionally be seen in other brands as well\u2014but Sugihara explains that this one is fundamentally different.<\/p>\n In standard practice, a sleeve is often split symmetrically down the center between the front and back sleeve panels. In the Draping Yoke Sleeve Shirt, the seam begins near the neckline on the back body, wraps around from behind to envelop the arm, and continues down to the cuff\u2014naturally encouraging the sleeve to angle forward.<\/p>\n As a result, the triangular peak of the sleeve settles exactly where it was intended when worn.<\/p>\n From the front, the sleeve appears clean and refined while softly curving into an arc, creating the impression that all parts of the garment are unified into one harmonious silhouette.<\/p>\n As will be mentioned later, this sleeve construction also has a \nBut according to Sugihara, this effect makes the figure look too flat and undesirably uniform.<\/p>\n
\nIf someone with a slightly different build from the intended model wears it, the drape may not fall where it should.<\/p>\n
\nThe ease on the back sleeve side allows the fabric to gently lift, spreading out to form a beautiful, voluminous triangular peak.<\/p>\n
\nIt\u2019s precisely controlled through the \u201csleeve seam\u201d circled in yellow, which manages both the volume and the form of the sleeve.<\/p>\n
